http://science.slashdot.org/story/10/07/27/2019244/Possible-Room-Temperature-Superconductor-Achieved

can anyone here say if its plausible?

>> No.1505743

No way to tell for sure unless you have the materials to test it

anyone can say anything and have been doing so for years, being able to build it and test it is the means to being able to prove it

which is beyond a basement dweller like me to be able to do

besides he said that possible superconductor which leads me to believe its bullshit

>> No.1505747

The science paper is posted on arXiv.org
Protip: arXiv isn't a science journal or peer reviewed.

The author hasn't gone through peer review yet. We'll know what the god-kings of physics think in a few weeks.

>> No.1505756

would be awesome if it was real. that's all I can say on the subject

>> No.1505775

I doubt it'll lead to anything. It's a single-author paper, and the author isn't well published. Plus he's from Bengal.

So are tigers.

>> No.1505927

It's a very very slim chance that this guy isn't bullshitting.

But:

1. Not peer reviewed
2. Released info to media first
3. The guy is from a basically unknown university in India, and if IT is anything to go by, universities in india will do/say just about anything

well, if it would e real, that would be totally awesome

If it were real, shit would revolutionize everything today.

Electric cars? Practical.
Efficient nation-wide electrical grid? Practical.
Vastly cheaper and more powerful particle accelerators? Practical.

Basically take any situation where electricity is used, and reduce the resistance in the wires to nothing. There's all kinds of things that could use this.

Hell maybe even electromagnetic launch systems for spacecraft, or who knows what else. Something like this might have as big an effect on today's world as the industrial revolution had in the 1800's/1900's.

You are forgetting that if this is anything like the other "warm" superconductors, their current carying capacity is pretty low.

So, hovering is fine, supplying juice for the nation - not so much.

>The results are strongly suggestive of a superconductive interfacial layer
>suggestive.

This 'paper' is something like preliminary notes or something.

>> No.1506029

I wish. I truly do. But I have my skeptics hat on and I'd bet against it.

If there is ever a shitty Half-Life movie, I demand Hugh Laurie plays Gordon Freeman.

Just because it is a room temperature superconductor does not automatically mean it cannot carry large currents.
