So let me get this "fusion breakthrough" straight...
>the lasers used to ignite the fuel consumed 500 MJ of energy to produce a 1.8 MJ laser beam which only produced 2.5 MJ of energy
So the energy output is still only 0.5% of the input... OH NO NO NO FUSIONCELS SAY IT AINT SO??? This is the big breakthrough???

Unironically yeah; however, Fusionlets need to get more funding, so they hype this up as if fusion is right around the corner.

well of course it's all coal, it's China. all underdeveloped countries are coal, and you cant really tell them not to because all the developed countries got there through coal power

If they used lasers to make a laser beam to make the energy why didn't they just skip making the laser beam and just use the original lasers to make the energy?

>> No.15053026

>>15053018
well they're trying to force the fuel pellet to collapse so that the fuel ignites, the pellet needs to be heated evenly on the outside so that its forced to collapse in on itself or the fuel wont ignite.

unless you mean why don't they just use lasers to make energy? thats because the lasers consume more energy than they produce, theyre not an energy source. fusion entails a release of energy so once you can get the fuel ignited under the proper conditions you can have a sustained reaction to eventually produce more energy t han consumed. the lasers are only used to ignite the fuel, so if they kept the fuel ignited somehow (im not sure why they couldn't) then they would eventually produce more energy than they used to generate the beam

ICF at NIF is more about weapons stockpile then it is about fusion energy. Nobody in fusion community is serious about making ICF commercial energy, anybody would tell you MCF is more credible. NIF is about producing fusion conditions to simulate weapons tests.

this makes sense because thermonukes use ICF, but so the hype for them over achieving ignition is purely so they can improve their simulations for thermonukes?
