hey /sci/

Have kind of a simple question, The LHC experiment going on right now. I know that the basic part of the experiment is to find certain particles and gain a better understanding of what may have occurred during the Big Bang but what exactly is the payoff?

What are we as a society on the verge of gaining from this project that could change our lives? I know the pursuit of knowledge is a great thing but is there any actual use in technology we can gain by doing this experiment? If so what would the possible pay offs be?

>> No.1505009

There is no pay off except expanded knowledge.

If we only ever looked for the short term benefits and gains, we'd have never developed the technologies we did.

Stop being short-sighted, OP.

Excuse me if I want to use my resources wisely on things that can actually HELP society. Figuring out what put us here doesn't exactly end world hunger, cure cancer, and give us green technology.

Our conceptions of basic physics tend to eventually trickle down (or up) toward more complicated and applicable science, and after that we get new technology. Not only do we get closer to solving the mysteries of the universe, our ability to usefully manipulate matter is expanded through experiments like the LHC.

if you're wondering how they got the funding
i bet a large part of it was making vague allusions to super-advanced technology from discovering the higgs boson (flying cars)

>> No.1505055

The LHC is attempting to solve THE equation.
If you don't understand how this is helpful, you should probably kill yourself.

>> No.1505056

Well, while it's understandable that you want more than just knowledge, that is the fundamental goal of science.

Genetics: develop GM crops to feed people
Radiation: MRIs to detect cancer
Physics: better batteries, fusion power, more efficient electronics
