Why is extrapolation harder than interpolation?

>> No.15045928

interpolation is within the bounds of possibility. extrapolation is outside the bounds of possibility.

Extrapolation involves more assumptions, divergence is more likely

The line only connects on one side to your data, the behavior of the line at the other side is highly variable and highly dependent on your choice of model.

I dont think it necessarily is harder, but we tend to extrapolate farther than we interpolate. On phone now but imagine I gave you the price of Bitcoin in late 2017 and again this year and both points were at about $20k and I told you to interpolate what happened in between. It would probably be harder than extrapolating the price mid 2023.

the set of possible interpolations is smaller than the set of possible extrapolations

EXTRApolation requires EXTRA effort. It’s in the name.

bounds of observation. extrapolation is potentially within the bounds of possibility.
