Well let's see... first flight successfully launches at least to orbit. How many flying trashcans has Musk blown up? If SpaceX had put the money and energy into further developing their real rockets, which are very good, instead of dicking around with Musk's shiny fanboi bait, they might have beaten NASA to a return moon mission.
But don;t worry, Musk is "very confident" that his silver POS system will be making orbital flights... just two more weeks, really!

There are two problems with that. First, you'd be pulling 8g or so at peak acceleration. Second, Crew Dragon's heatshield isn't rated for lunar return.

>>14991707
A lot of it is safety related. Apollo was very much "#yolo let's see what happens" with regards to crew radiation exposure, but Artemis is supposed to be a pathfinder for sustainable industry, which means you actually need adequate shielding (which shouldn't be too hard, they're testing a vest for it).

>> No.14991728

Technically, yes. The combination is obviously not man-rated because there's been no use for it, and FH hasn't flown enough to be eligible under the CCP rules; IIRC they wanted 7 flights of the same launch vehicle design. But obviously SLS isn't doing 7 flights, so the man-rating rules for Artemis are different, not sure what if any modifications and additional test flights would be required.
And then there's the whole question of acceleration; I have no idea what a 3G-max profile would look like, either in terms of performance loss or impact on booster reuse.

AMD got a System-on-Chip containing a big FPGA certified for rad-hard space use. This article has a lot of marketing fluff but it's legitimately very cool. FPGAs are typically much faster and more power efficient than doing things in software alone, which means you can do more on-orbit compute with a given mass/volume/heat/power budget.

Lets face it /sfg/, the launch was kino, it almost looked like the Saturn V. Yes i know , its expensive, old, blah blah but you need to think in the bigger picture. Its the first step toward a permanent moon base.

Slowly but steady.

This also will put pressure on Starship working asap. We all win here. Yes , i know Artemis 3 is scheduled for 2027-2028 , but remember that there will be PLENTY of Starships to the moon in between, and also, when the day finally arrives, seeing astronauts taking off, the refuel campaign, seeing SuperHeavys going up and down almost every day, hearing "we are go for powered descend" , proper SpaceX webcast with proper cameras live at the landing, opening the hatch from 50m, getting in the elevator, going down, and then a camera capturing an astronaut looking to Starship and seeing a monolith in the middle of the moon. Absolute bonkers.

All of this will take time, but it will be worth waiting .

yeah bro, i would also like Nasa saying fuck it, we scrap block 1 and we go directly to block 2, and it will be completed in 2 years, then 5 mission in that year, at least 2 of those with prebuilded habs for the surface, and the next year 10 launches a year transporting more equipment and people. By 2027 Mars crew landing and we are starting now to build the mars crewed descent/ascent rocket. By 2029 a permanent Mars space station.

As 14993114 said MMSEV was dropped in favor of the Japanese design
AFAIK Nautilus X was just a notional design and T2AT's entry for NASA's 2010 ISS-derived Exploration System study. The others designs were MFSC's Deep Space Habitat and Boeing's Exploration Gateway Plateform. The NASA study called for notionals designs for a modular spacecraft that could be assembled at the ISS (node 2), if possible using space parts (like Node STA, MPLM, Hab), before heading to the Moon, L1 or Mars with an Orion spacecraft and a crew. Like much of the HSF stuff that NASA did at the time it went nowhere.

honestly who gives a fuck at this point. It’s 1,000,000x less embarrassing than giving BO a contract and at least it keeps congress happy enough to keep artemis alive, which in turn is using Starship because their idea of also getting a grift lander backfired. SLS is way too expensive but it isn’t “holding up spaceflight” so much as it is just “failing to advance” it. Your taxes don’t go up a single penny whether this rocket cost $1 mil or $4 bil, and starship is going to push the frontier toward regardless of SLS’s existence or not
Best to just look at the silver linings now, know that it’s more competent than POCKOCMOC, and be glad that it makes Artemis more stable and gives jobs to SeX for gateway construction and crewed landings that will dab on every other rocket company. With the recent announcement the Space Launch System (SLS) has become challenged by her schedule, the NASA rocket may soon find herself in a battle with a commercial “alternative”. SpaceX’s super powerful Exploration Class rocket is targeting crewed missions to Mars up to 10 years ahead of SLS – although both vehicles continue to avoid being classed as competitors.

HLS will look nothing like the fancy Starship landers.
Crew quarters will be minimal on Artemis III (see the HLS contract), Dragon 2-derived so that means no giant windows, classy lounge or Loft-sized spaces inside. The interior of Starship HLS is going to look like an austere Crew Dragon cabin filled with stuff (like the ISS), with a basic airlock underneath.

Crew quarters *could* improve on the upgraded Starship for the second landing (A5) but it will still be a long way from what was originally promised by Musk
