What's the purpose of tooth paste?

The important thing is to get food bits out of the teeth surfaces and small gaps and crevices.
I felt like mouthwash is just an antiseptic because cleaning your gums causes cuts.
As for the paste i dont know what it does. If it was somewhat alkaline it could aid on cleaning greases. Is that the main function?

if nothing else it's a medium for the scrubbed-off stuff that was on your teeth, creating enough volume through its foaming action that your mouth has something to work with when it's time to spit it out. You could also use water, but since water is so much denser it slips out of your mouth much more easily, since it's much more responsive to gravity. Then it gets on your clothes.
Also, it tastes better and smells better than just water plus tooth crud.

It's basically an abrasive with a lubricant base.

Supposedly the fluoride helps to reharden the top layer of enamel after you damage the tooth's enamel when brushing.

Eating a 100% meat diet and water, will eliminate the need to ever brush your teeth, and they will stay perfectly healthy. Carbs are the enemy of teeth.
