So was it just to see if they could hit in the first place or to see if they could alter the trajectory?
Did they alter it that much if so?
Looks like a asphalt potato kinda neat

It is to see how much it moves by and if astorid nukes are worth investing in.

>> No.14879185

>>14879042
The latter, and they don’t know yet it's the next step in the mission, they'll observe it over the coming weeks. It's expected to be a very small change in trajectory.

>astorid nukes
aren't asteroids pretty soft due to low gravity?
nuking one would be like using a grenade to "gently push" a spoonful of mashed potatoes

It’s just a waste of money. It’s completely obvious to anyone that if you introduce energy into a system in space, then it will change its trajectory by an amount relative to its size/energy.
They should’ve gone all out and nuked an asteroid.

>> No.14879239

>>14879214
saying its possible to kick an asteroid and having a tested-to-work system that is ready to kick an asteroid are two very different things

>> No.14879260

>>14878654
This is fake. No camera can auto-focus itself so quickly to get high-resolution images of the asteroid. The spacecraft was speeding 24,000 km/h apparently.

More like it's a blender animation.

oops, turns out asteroids are less consolidated than you expected and absorb the energy of the impact, good thing you didn't test in advance, now everyone is dead

>> No.14879891

>>14879260
No focus is necessary, just focus to infinity and you'll get decent images of anything that's more than a few meters away.

If an asteroid was heading towards earth, we would have to send several nukes at it on a regularly scheduled basis in order to destroy it (so that the fragments would burn up in the atmosphere) or move it off course so that it misses the earth.

NASA should be focusing on asteroid mining and helping establish a space economy that generates revenue.

Besides, what kind of weird camera is that? This spacecraft travelled with around 6 kilometers per second.

If I were looking to the sky and see a plane 10km above me, it's super super tiny. If I launch myself to the plane, after 1.5 seconds or 9 of 10km the plane will still look tiny. 100m before the crash, the plane will be large enough to see any details.

And this spacecraft could do that from thousands of kilometres away? Really? Travelling towards the system, fairly good details along with Didymos, then suddenly you see the whole surface of the tiny moon then it takes another 10 seconds of impact instead of 1 or less? Looks fishy to me.

>> No.14880314

>>14880286
I think it's more about being less time intensive. It takes way more time to train a group of astronauts to do a "Armageddon" style solution than send a bunch of satellites to change trajectory.

lmao that space shit is so fucking boring and worthless that even OP can't come up with a legitimate reply to vainly bump his tedious, unwanted space shit thread with.
we would have a far better board if empty bumps of vanity threads weren't permitted, good posters do not resort to those types of manipulative tactics.
