I have attempted to engage in a meaningful mathematical discussion on multiple occasions, all with the same results. either you get ignored or some idiot spreads misinformation on purpose. you can't take this seriously, it's like having a conversation where every 10 seconds someone rips a fart or screams in the background. I remember when i first came here, i was building a small bio/chem lab in my back yard, and needed advice on air flow rates for my hepa filters.
I got some meme answers, but i also got some decent advice by some physics bros.
I later came to career advice general, which actually helped me in getting to the good position i'm in now.

Even at the beginnig of the rona, i tired to have real discussions about how mRNA vaccines can or can not damage you, how ivermectin works and why it may or may not be usefull. But even that died. It's flat earth tier shit now.
So often i come here to see if there is anything interesting and find it's no better than /pol/ and not worth the effort of replying because my reply won't even be read or considered.
It's sad anons, i miss old /sci/. Thankfully i have a few irl STEM friends with whom i can discuss my projects or just blow shit up or discuss dumb shit like how we would turn a lizard into a dragon if we really wanted to.

Nah, that's physics, i don't really know enough about that to engege in the conversation. Closest thhing i have any knowledge on is biophysics. But that sort of thing, and the weird math threads where people argue about things i don't understand, is not something that botheres me, infact, those are good. Nanochan's derivative-of-a-polynomial captcha was at a reasonable enough difficulty level that it wasn't annoying to do every post, but it was probably not hard enough to stop any but the dumbest posters, and likely turned away a lot of people who could have solved it with a little searching, but didn't want to bother. But I think this sort of solution focuses on eliminating the retards too much. It doesn't affect schizos, deliberate retards, or malicious people. You can't get rid of the need for moderation.

The idea is that malicious retards can do this shit en masse because they own captcha solvers or won't be bothered sliding a captcha for 3 seconds. fairly easy. they don't need to be dynamic when you have a high pool of presolved equations from some textbooks. Making the same goes for parametric equations, you know the integral over sin(x) doesnt change each period, for this problem type you can easily program multiples of 2pi in the integral. Is it even possible to have an active legitimate science board? What's the overlap between people who are interested in science, qualified in science, and interested in posting about science online? It's a tiny percentage of the population. Now overlap that with people who know a particular field of science. That's even fewer people. Then overlap that with people who are willing to become jannies. You get a very small pool of potential users and an even smaller pool of potential mods.
