14869708 No.14869708 [Reply] [Original]

this board didn't stand the test of time. the highly skilled anons with knowledge mostly left. what remained is only recycled garbage. and it keeps going day for day. the only people putting in effort are PDE chads, some quantum bros and a tiny fraction of other anons. the rest is either shitting out half baked threads or larping schizophrenics with walls of texts, not to mention the containment board influx. Don't believe me? Look for yourself at the replies of some effort threads >>14866112 or >>14867214.
> instead of complaining why don't you make a good thread?
I have attempted to engage in a meaningful mathematical discussion on multiple occasions, all with the same results. either you get ignored or some idiot spreads misinformation on purpose. you can't take this seriously, it's like having a conversation where every 10 seconds someone rips a fart or screams in the background. Hell, even OPs are doing this themselves sometimes, makes you wonder how many bots there are on this platform. anyways, you reap what you sow chuds.

nothing of value ever came from 4chan except horny teen girls, but a pseudo-academia board full of nitwits who believe they're smart even though they have only negligently accepted being taught by know-nothing professors reading from know-nothing books is not a measure of success by any means. All mathematicians believe that archimedes was correct and derived formulas from his inane schizo psychobabble and now we live in a world which legitimately incorrectly believes the surface area of a sphere is [math]4 \pi r^2[/math] rather than the correct formula of [math]\pi ^2 r^2[/math]. Archimedes formula was from over 2000 years ago. All modern mathematics with any relationship with spheres is wrong, the least of which is the apparent size of any planet, much less Earth.

It is a sobering wake up call to realize people have been certain of the size of the Earth while using a false math formula to get their estimate, and that even right this goddamned moment the only one who knows the size of Earth is God himself.

i heavily doubt humans ever made it to the moon or mars. conspiracy, lies, and false assumptions were the strongest building blocks of such potential endeavors. Only by divine intervention alone might such things have happened, like a baby being taught to play by their parent. No way does humanity actually deserve to be spoonfed with divine intervention.

Science is the property of Satan, scientists worship the snake who gave Adam and Eve the fruit of knowledge(aka the fruit of science).
if you look into the claims of the Bible seriously you find out they're all true
Dinosaurs are fake, globe is fake, earth is flat, space is fake, evolution is fake (not enough time macroevolution never observed), life arising out of nothing is fake, earth and nature obviously designed by a creator (total solar eclipse is his signature). Jesus has verifiable historicity. Roman sources depict resurrection. Jesus' resurrection is accepted as historically true by skeptical resurrection scholars.

The thirst for knowledge is a sin, just like the lust for power, the craving of money and riches.
Scientists are arrogant and not really that smart, Mistaking maths and science for reality is a dire mistake. Mankind will never be equal to God and will never grasp the laws of the universe due to our own imperfections.

I remember when i first came here, i was building a small bio/chem lab in my back yard, and needed advice on air flow rates for my hepa filters.
I got some meme answers, but i also got some decent advice by some physics bros.
I later came to career advice general, which actually helped me in getting to the good position i'm in now.
I also often talked about my research, i'm working on epigenetics in ageing, so i can talk a lot about the mechanisms of ageing.
There was always some shitposting, and i didn't mind and also there was a lot of good shit. I even enjoyed reading threads on shit i barely understood.
It got worse around 2016, but it was the infulx of retards when covid hit that totally ruined this place as >>14869725 said.
Even at the beginnig of the rona, i tired to have real discussions about how mRNA vaccines can or can not damage you, how ivermectin works and why it may or may not be usefull. But even that died. It's flat earth tier shit now.
So often i come here to see if there is anything interesting and find it's no better than /pol/ and not worth the effort of replying because my reply won't even be read or considered.
It's sad anons, i miss old /sci/. Thankfully i have a few irl STEM friends with whom i can discuss my projects or just blow shit up or discuss dumb shit like how we would turn a lizard into a dragon if we really wanted to.
But i really feel sorry for the frens here who have no one to talk to, the true autists of /sci/. Hope you anons are hanging in there.

Nah, that's physics, i don't really know enough about that to engege in the conversation. Closest thhing i have any knowledge on is biophysics. But that sort of thing, and the weird math threads where people argue about things i don't understand, is not something that botheres me, infact, those are good. It's more the /pol/ or /b/ tier threads and discussion i am bothered by. The "everything is fake and gay and earth is flat and science is evil" kind of shit. It's everywhere. Just the nature of conversation has changed here.
When talking to some one, you really can tell if they have atleas a university education, and can talk coherently like adults. And the proportion of these kind of people has decreased dramatically.
And if i see something i know a lot about, and gve a detailed answer with sources linked, arguments made, and a potential for further investigation, and the answer i get is "i didn't read it but i'm right so fuck off" is not as much fun as one could have had here a while back.

the lateral surface area of a cylinder is [math](2 \pi r) \times height[/math]
the lateral surface area of a cone is [math](2 \pi r) \times \frac{Slope Length}{2}[/math]
if instead of using a straight line to produce a cone, use a curved line, then a "cone" will be made in the shape of a half sphere.
[math]2\pi r[/math] defines the length of the curved line to build the circumference of a circle, and [math]\frac{2\pi r}{4}[/math] then defines a quarter of that, between 0-90 degrees, or the two endpoints of a similar straight line defining the lateral slope length of a cone.
[math]\big((2 \pi r) \times \frac{(\frac{2\pi r}{4})}{2}\big) = \big((2 \pi r) \times (\frac{2\pi r}{8})\big) = \frac{4\pi ^2 r^2}{8} = \frac{\pi ^2 r^2}{2} [/math]
this is just a half sphere "cone" however, so multply by two for both halves combined and you get [math]\pi ^2 r^2[/math]

The main issues seem to be schizos with their pet theories, people asking dumb questions that can be answered with a quick search, and people asking questions which obviously try to provoke a political discussion.

mathchan took something great in theory but decided to meme it with their autism. noone will solve graph theory problems to answer. noone will want to spend 5 minutes on a difficult calculation only to reply with a short post. the site is dead and rightly so, that's just an outright stupid concept. Yeah I admit not being able to solve some specialized abstract algebra problems but guess what, even if I could I'd rather not spend that much effort. The situation changes with precalc questions. Everyone should be able to solve simple questions of precalculus. If they don't, how on earth should they be allowed to question the fundamentals of infinite sets and real numbers? As a compromise you could have default captchas on threads made specifically for newcomers and anons starting math. But having some retard shit in every thread is just awful.

>> No.14874876

>>14874800
i like the idea of using precalc/calc problems for captchas. The main argument against them is that anons can just plug in the problem into wolfram or whatever, but there are often problems which can't be solved with a simple calculation-it's usually the problems where the results are general and you have to set it up yourself i.e no variables given. Surely this can work with a collection of hand picked problem sets from an old problem book that are changed every so often.

Nanochan's derivative-of-a-polynomial captcha was at a reasonable enough difficulty level that it wasn't annoying to do every post, but it was probably not hard enough to stop any but the dumbest posters, and likely turned away a lot of people who could have solved it with a little searching, but didn't want to bother. But I think this sort of solution focuses on eliminating the retards too much. It doesn't affect schizos, deliberate retards, or malicious people. You can't get rid of the need for moderation.

also "parameteic" problems that are trivial, like integral from 0 to 2pi*n of sin(x) where n is an arbitrary integer. Basically problems that are easy enough to be solvable in 20 seconds or max. 1 minute for an inexperienced anon on paper.
> it doesn't affect shizos and malicious people
I believe it will work to some extent, although I agree the effect won't be overwhelming. The idea is that malicious retards can do this shit en masse because they own captcha solvers or won't be bothered sliding a captcha for 3 seconds. Either way, I'd be happy knowing the retard had to activate his 5 remaining braincells to have his post allowed. Might get tiresome for him over time. It would also be interesting to see how many bots it would prune. If you notice an immediate change in quality once you introduce such math captchas you can estimate the amount of bots present on this board right now.

Mathchan captcha is great, you only need to solve them once, due to low traffic the captcha doesn't change so you solve once and post whenever you want, i'm interested to see how the guy running it will manage higher traffic.

fairly easy. they don't need to be dynamic when you have a high pool of presolved equations from some textbooks. Making the same goes for parametric equations, you know the integral over sin(x) doesnt change each period, for this problem type you can easily program multiples of 2pi in the integral. All of it doesn't matter because they will never implement such an idea.

Is it even possible to have an active legitimate science board? What's the overlap between people who are interested in science, qualified in science, and interested in posting about science online? It's a tiny percentage of the population. Now overlap that with people who know a particular field of science. That's even fewer people. Then overlap that with people who are willing to become jannies. You get a very small pool of potential users and an even smaller pool of potential mods.
