what's the best way to become a mad scientist? do i get a degree (which degree?) or do i do shit on my own? i just want to experiment with lasers and create weapons of mass destruction

"mad" scientists aren't mad, they just have the balls to do what they want.
So really the question is what do you want to go mad about.
But to answer directly, Chemistry or Electrical engineering are probably the most stereotypical mad scientist topics

Be wicked smart
Achieve a lot with ur smarts, yes that includes getting a degree, you must have at least 3 or 4, because everyone has 2 nowadays
Get disillusioned
Kill people with your knowledge
Simple as.
If you don't want to do that, you can settle for being an eccentric scientist, just develop lovable but annoying quirks and idiosyncrasies

All scientists become mad and disconnected from reality the more they study science.
Science is just an imaginary mind control tool to entrap the masses via "education".
Read the Bible if you want to know about truth and how God forbade Adam and Eve from eating the fruit of knowledge(science).

you need to have a fundamental understanding of how the world works

Personally I am at a point in my life where I abstain from all theoretical physics because I don't want to dedicate a significant portion of my life towards destroying the universe. It seems obvious to me that a lot of work has yet to be published in a clear concise way, and it seems that is on purpose due to the implications of perfected knowledge. Oppenheimer making references to Vishnu 80 years ago didn't go unheard IMO. In fact I am almost 99% certain that most modern intelligence agencies spend most of their time putting out disinformation on science so that nutjobs and world powers won't figure out the secrets to unlimited energy. Just look at the lengths MOSSAD went with STUXNET, one of the most novel computer viruses ever made. And if it didn't target industrial control systems that are also commonly used in the west, it might have never been discovered. And my conspiracies on unlimited energy aside, its simply a fact that a modern virus like stuxnet could easily control the propagation of information among other things. And with the NSA archiving the entire internet through PRISM, it should be completely possible for total information contextual control.

Medicine or electrical engineering. Real life mad scientists either experiment on humans or build Tesla coils. Cartoon mad scientists are experts in everything.

found the correct link
https://users.ox.ac.uk/~abrg/spider_site/index.html
their main purpose seems to be finding applications and betterment of the silk industry with the help of spiders
they are mainly trying to find the uses of spider silk in medicines and light weight material productions
they are also mentioning about something called "aquamelt", i can't bend much info but it seems as some more energy efficient way of """folding silk strands"""" ?
they have also put forward tons of conclusions regarding spiders, their web silk and hunting techniques, will try to read more into it as half of the things mentioned make no sense to my brainlet ass

yep, i thought that they actually stabbed the guy's leg with those nails but upon closer look they just look sort of clamps to minimalize moment, i also think they must have sedated the spider in some way cuz i don't think any spider would be this lethargic while having a silking session

By understanding the Windlass mechanism of the spider's capture silk, researchers from the University of Oxford, UK and Université Pierre et Marie Curie CNRS, France, have produced an artificial micro-motor. Capture silk can elongate up to 400%, and yet return to its original tautness multiple times. These materials could be used as artificial muscles or for flexible electronics.

A real mad scientist has expertise and knowledge across several domains. Get an undergraduate degree in something foundational, then get a few graduate degrees that span several areas, but are related (like cs and electrical engineering). Then focus on one topic that you excel at. You can't master everything but you should have a sold foundation in many disciplines, that is, if said discipline is related to what your goals are.

Also yes, you should always be tinkering.
