How do we actually know how fast gravity moves? I got into an argument this morning and someone linked a source that says it moves at the speed of light. But how can we tell that when all the mass that exists already existed and can't be destroyed or deleted? It seems like you would have to be able to bring it in and out of existence to tell how fast its gravity effects surrounding mass.

there have been neutron star mergers measured by LIGO as well as by normal astronomical telescopes. it turns out that the gravitational waves and the normal electromagnetic radiation from the neutron star merger arrive at the same time even after traveling for billions of years. this implies that the gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves (including light) must be traveling the same speed to within a few parts in a billion or even closer

Speed of light is not really the speed of light.
It's the speed of causality.
Coincidentally, it is also the speed of massless particles, or anything massless, it is also the speed of all information transfer.

If the influence of gravity did not travel at the speed of light, it wouldn't make sense within the current framework.
