Hello /sci/ what do you think of the SKYLON spaceplane concept?
It uses two air breathing hybrid SABRE engines to achieve orbit.
Slthough made to be a cheap unmanned cargo transport it is capable of carrying 24 passengers to LEO and to a space station(It would have to be a bigelow complex because the ISS can't hold 24 people and 4 BA 330's can).

It is fail because "SABRE dramatically cools the air from 1000 °C down to -140 °C" = ice blocking the shit up

Yeah I fucking stole it too. Pic related, mashing my face in a tree. Also laughing. I find this funny.

I don't think you realize how fast that thing's moving. The air's moving hypersonically, it's fucking ionizing when it hits it. Ain't gonna be no ice formation or much less condensation on that fucker.

Also the launch cost is still pretty expensive with something like this is it not? Laser pulsed plasma propusion could be much cheaper.

Also, air breathing fusion engines are cooler:

The Hybrid Jet Rocket is fine and uses conventional technology and manufacturing. We could have one today. We could have one decades ago. Might as well build it now and start using it. After it is built you get to have every launch it can perform for the rest of it's operational life for only the cost of the fuel and maintenance. You don't have to build a brand new one for every launch and WE CAN BUILD IT FUCKING YESTERDAY!

Lightweight reusable hypersonic air breathing vehicle technology is not developed enough to create a serviceable craft. The Air Force is still doing fundamental research in most of the areas of hypersonic aircraft for a reason. Private companies use 30+ year old analysis tools to predict heating and loading on these aircraft. This shit will not be ready for years and its first instance will not be through a private company.

I haven't reasearched laser pulsed plasma much so not really sure about. This is surely an evolutionary improvement not revolutionary, so the cost improvement over conventional rockets is marginal at best. Still, it's a step we NEED to take in order to move on to bigger and better things. An air-breathing engine is about the best specific impulse that's achievable currently while still having enough thrust to reach orbit.

Laser pulsed plasma... is the laser on the ground or on the vehicle?

>> No.1485084

I would think the skylon spaceplane is achievable in 10 or 20 years if they are suitably funded. Fusion drives are pretty much a pie in the sky though.

>> No.1485116

>>1482219

It's not airbreathing, and it's only hypersonic in appreciable atmosphere when it's reentering the atmosphere, not exiting. They're different beasts.

>>1485005

Making the least conservative assumptions, a pure air breathing engine still can't reach low earth orbit. A hybrid jet/rocket system is needed, though if we can a good working one it'll still be a big step forward.

>> No.1485128

Because reusable launch vehicles have been so much more cost-effective and reliable than big dumb rockets.

That's why the Shuttle is way cheaper than the Soyuz, right?
