Is it possible for homo sapiens to devolve into wild animals? Let's say you put a bunch of newborn babies into the Amazon jungle and somehow they manage to survive by their own. This group of homo sapiens wouldn't know how to speak or use tools so, would they become savages or perhaps develop some kind of primitive culture? Is it possible for homo sapiens to return to monkey? Or is our rational sense too powerful to not end up at least becoming a primitive community similar to the ones already existing across the globe?

I have been reading up on the Piraha people from Brazil, and came upon the idea that they are in fact descended from children abandoned in the Amazon (or perhaps a disease killed the adults or the like), as an explanation for the many unusual features of their culture & language. They lack any sort of oral history past a generation or two, no real mythology, very little concern for the future, have a very simple kinship system, lack abstract color words beyond dark and light, no real number system, possible lack of recursion in their language, and so on.
