Nobody measured global temperatures before 1960. Even today its a feat to do measurements of the entire earth.
Things like tree rings of some european forest are just not accurate. You just can't know the temperature of the earth in the past.
Why? Because of the scientific method. You can't do controlled experiments to test the claims of accurate measurements. These claims are like the claims of the big bang and the age of the universe, maybe the hypothesis sounds very logical but you just can't test it therefore its not science.
