I use to do this for making tea. One thing I learned.

If you use a VERY clean cup, that doesn't have any scrapes or scratches and is perfectly smooth on the inside, and you heat the water hot enough to boil, there's a possibility that it won't boil, even tho it's hot enough. This can only happen when there are no nucleation sites for the water to boil. Again, you need a VERY clean mug with a perfectly smooth surface. A double walled borosilicate glass mug is what did the trick for me. Then when you pick it up the mug, or drop a spoon in, or add anything to the water, it's enough to trigger a rapid and highly energetic boiling. If this happens while holding it, you will burn your hand.

That's the only risk after many years that I am aware of. How I compensate? Before picking up the mug, and while it's still in the microwave, grab a freind and say, "wanna see a cool trick" then quickly drop a spoon and run away, watching the cup explode in a geyser of boiling water that also doubles to clean the microwave interior.... or just heat the water for less time.

The "real reason" you're not supposed to microwave water is because the water gets heated unevenly so you can easily think the water is a safe temperature to drink and then wind up burning your tongue and throat.

Of course if you just stir the water then you'll homogenize the temperature, negating this "problem". Still, it's fair that people should at least know the concept before proceeding, especially if they're heating something up for a newborn who is fragile.

It doesn't heat any more uniformly than a kettle. In fact it's worse at it because there's very little mixing happening due to heating primarily from the top and sides instead from the bottom.
Superheating is also an issue that can happen. Just get a kettle. A 2 kW electric kettle will heat up water way faster and more efficiently than any microwave.
