Let's finally put this to rest: is it "math" or "maths"?

Math is an abbreviation of mathematics. It is a group word and so plural to begin with.

The word is not Mathsematics, and so the abbreviation is math not maths.

There is no reason to say maths because the word maththematics is the singular name of the group.
To say maths implies there are different mathematics which is implied by the word mathematics to begin with.

Besides, it sounds queer.

Therefore, anything that has 学 as its suffix is a non-plural noun, which means that there is no such thing as "mathematics", but only "mathematic" - the study of countables.
