I liked this book when first getting into stats from my math background, as I found most other intro stats books just too far away from the typical math way of doing things. Hopefully someone else finds it useful too.

I think he means it in a measure theoretic way, building up Boolean algebras and measures. Of course, such a treatment is not suitable for an introduction of the sort the book is going for and would delay the student from getting to the main points.

A random variables is a measurable functions from a probability space [math](\Omega,\mathscr{A}, P)[/math] into a measurable space. So if you have a real-valued random variable [math]X:\Omega \to \mathbb{R}[/math] then you must have that
[eqn]X^{-1} (A) \in \mathscr{A}[/eqn]
for every [math]A \in \mathscr{B}(\mathbb{R})[/math]. This measurability condition is the most important part of the definition of a random variable.

The book I recommended does not claim to be for mathematicians nor does it claim to be rigorous. I recommended it because it's more comprehensive and has a lot of exercises, and is so far the best intro I have found to mathematical statistical without being too autistic.

The textbook already assumes the reader has taken an intro course in probability (and also attempts to be a short textbook), so an appendix makes the most sense.

>>14708079

I have skimmed Statistical Inference before and it's good too, but you've given Panaretos' book undue criticism. It certainly looks to be sufficiently rigorous for a first course, especially relative to the garbage heap of stats textbooks that I've looked at.

I just didn't like the fact that half of SI was about probability when I've already taken a course in that. SfM seems to assume such knowledge and only teaches the stats part in a much more compact text, which is why it looks appealing.

Just read Austrian Economics. All other theories are either marxist theory watered down or some globohomo government nonesense to support idiotic action to win elections.
Austrian Economics have been bleeding over into modern economics for decades, like with the boom bust cycle, understanding of supply and demand, and more and more - inflation.

What you call macroeconomics is just millions of individuals making decisions together influenced by institutions with power.

There have been various comparisons between books on Analysis.
Can anyone give a comparison between Zorich and the other books by Rudin, Pugh and Abbott?

A Little Background
I am doing self-study of Analysis on my own. I have started reading Zorich's texts on Analysis. But when I looked on the internet for reviews, Rudin, Pugh and Abbott had more reviews. Also, Zorich's texts are in two volumes and will take some mighty effort.

In any case, I am actually loving Zorich and would like to continue with this book. Please provide me some comparison between these books

>Rudin, Pugh and Abbott had more reviews.
It's because those three are originally English texts whereas Zorich is a relatively recent translation.
If you're enjoying it there's no need to switch, in fact provided you do both volumes zorich has a lot more content than any of the books you mentioned.

As the other anon mentioned, Zorich is newer, but in my opinion, far better than the competition. This anon did a good job comparing Rudin and Zorich >>/sci/thread/S14684883#p14689318
People will always call you retarded, etc. for not going with baby Rudin as they've been lobotomized to believe there isn't anything better than it due to memes and have quite frankly never read any other Analysis text.
With Zorich's difficulty and lack of solutions for exercises it may be a bit harder to go through than more popular Analysis texts, however.

Amann-Escher has the noble goal of attempting to be self-contained and being as general as possible with its claims right from the get go. They rigorously go through Peano Axioms, groups, rings, formal power series, complex numbers and linear algebra etc. before even starting on convergence. Its disadvantage is that if you are not already somewhat familiar with these topics, 150 pages dedicated to them will feel too little.
The advantage is that when you see a theorem in this book, you know you've seen the most general version i.e. the authors don't assume the real field (over complex), Euclidean norm, unless necessary. They define what a Banach Space is by page 190 for fuck's sake, that's certainly the only "introductory" analysis book I've seen with that feature.

I've never gone through any Zorich to compare, but just skimming a few pages I can tell it doesn't have the pedagogical uniqueness Amann-Escher possesses. This isn't necessarily a negative quality of course, on the contrary that probably makes it a much better introductory book. Moreover, Zorich seems to outdo a bunch of the most popular analysis books by actually including applications and covering as much ground as he can.

>> No.14716219 [DELETED]

>>14716203
Zorich is more general than most Analysis books I have seen. He employs the use of the "base" (in the sense of Bourbaki), as a topological notion to replace the classical Ɛ-𝛿 notion from a more general perspective (hence, the topological notion is not just merely limited to the reals). While it's not comparable to Amann-Escher with regards to generality, it's still fairly self-contained. I'd say it's pretty great for self-study.

I understand the usefulness of analysis/geometry/topology, but this book seems to be a solution seeking a problem. Before investing in learning winding numbers I went to the section of the book on applications to analysis to see what new theorems in analysis might be provable thanks to these winding numbers if I invest in learning them, but looking at the theorems they all seem to be results you can get with a standard functional analysis curriculum that doesn’t introduce winding numbers, so why would an analysist go through learning winding numbers if it’s only going to be used to prove results he already knows. Now I can see someone who already knows winding numbers and not functional analysis may get something out of this, however they’re only going to learn the narrow scope of functional analysis where winding numbers can be applied the coincidence, they’re not going to understand analysis in the way actual analysists do.

>> No.14726997

>>14726936
Well, the usefulness comes from the fact that the winding number (and really algebraic topology in general) isnt only useful in analysis, or geometry, or topology, but in all three. Having one concept that allows you to prove and explore results that otherwise might require more specialized methods and tools. I think that is a pretty common theme in math and thus shouldnt be suprising. If you just want to learn FA, then its not the book for you, of course.

And most importantly: i posted and recommended that book because i think its fun and enjoyable, not because its a "must know" topic or some powerful machinery.
If you want something like that instead (e.g. a textbook that uses sophisticated methods in analysis, geometry and topology to prove powerful results), I'd recommend Roes book on the Atiyah Singer Index theorem instead

One thing is that a bare minimum knowledge of either French German or Russian was a requirement at most math grad programs until recently (around 2005-2010 is when I saw all the programs dropping the requirement). With a French English dictionary it's not that hard to get through a math paper when it's largely symbols and repeated terms. But the new English edition does have added content and exercises (the original french did not have any exercises) so it's a translation + update.

Damn, MIT and Harvard trained, practical engineer, gets on Hegel, writes 500 pages of schizo shit.

Sad! Very many cases. Happens to mathematicians too.

Dr. Matthew C. Harris dedicated his manifesto to Hegel somewhere in there (attached). He was a Black philosopher who nonetheless wrote the most /pol/ manifesto ever and then threatened to kill a fellow philosophy faculty member for "giving him schizophrenia." Some highlights from his students after his arrest:

>He sent them his own porn, had them watch his misogynistic crazy Youtube videos ranting about killing feminists, sent pictures of UCLA cheerleaders to the women in the class, etc. He made students write 25 page papers about why Hitler targeted the Jews (that he later used in his antisemitic comments), things that had nothing to do with the class, and they were so worried about their GPAs that some of them did it. One former student wrote that a classmate's grade was changed 43 times after the class ended, and wrote that their own was changed 3 times. Excerpt:
"He assigned us to write a 21-25 page final on the “racialization of Jews” in Mein Kampf.

>He also emailed us links to his Youtube channel which had videos with titles such as “Kill a Feminist for Islam”, “Beat a Feminist Unconscious”, “Soft Ethnocide”, many of which had very disturbing thumbnails, such as underage girls sticking out their tongues or photos of Ucla Volleyball girls. I took a picture of my laptop when he linked it. The channel was deleted within minutes after. He also linked to his own porn.

I took a picture of my laptop when he linked it. The channel was deleted within minutes after. He also linked to his own porn.

>And he mentions his porn and sexual fantasies frequently in the last few books of his manifesto which he emailed to me and around 60 others (nearly all of whom, based on the names, are also women). The manifesto is incredibly violent and graphic. I received 7 emails in total. One which said, “sum of u liked the porn.. NA my uncensored lectures are here on jewtube”, to which he provided a link.

>His assignments last spring were a LOT. We were expected to write 5-8 pages per week. And many of the assignments seemed incongruent to the aims of the class. In the span of the quarter, I wrote over 65 pages for him (including extra credit).

>Reading my final paper now gives me a stomach ache. I wrote about Hitler’s negative racialization of Jews and it’s harmful impacts. Now it’s clear he just read these papers as fodder for his anti-Semitic views."

It's sort of sad /pol/ won't read it because he is black, because this is the Beethoven's Ninth of /pol/ schizo. Then again, they don't deserve nice things.

It's a pretty great serious book. You will really understand analysis if you go through it like a wizard and solve every exercise. That being said, it's not easy, nor should any true analysis book be easy. If you don't want to be a mathematician and just get an overview of analysis, then this book is certainly too rigorous.

Analysis financial markets is obviously a big component of financial analysis, and the whole reason Macroeconomics came to be in the first place, is because stock market crashed. But modern academic economics, focuses too much on their bullshit math models than actual heuristics; and those bullshit models are more focused on what the government should do to prevent those crashes. Economists are really failed physicists. There is a high correlation between both subjects, but I really doubt any Macroeconomics book is worth reading if you want to do anything that does not include abusing math. Though what you should read is why all the financial crises happened, but not the retarded models, economists made about it.

Recall that actual mathematics PhDs refused to believe the correct answer to the Monte Hall problem until watching a computer model simulate it. Then think about how much worse the issue would be if it was significantly more complex, with say 10,000 doors and various rounds of opening different numbers of doors.

The original should be quite simple, but frequentism is a hell of a drug. Get smart, get logical, get Bayseian, avoid repeating the replication crisis.
