Why do electricity volts travel in a disorderly, zigzag formation, and how can we make them straight and beam-like?

ever watch a lightning bolt is slow motion?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQKhIK4pvYo
skip to 5:30

It creates a fan of very thin lightning bolts that slowly grows as it ionizes the air in the atmosphere till it reaches a new point of least resistance. I think the "zig zag" are an artifact left over from when the fan if first generated.

Is all that light, electrons snapping into place in an atom, and or snapping out of place?

the majority of the current is going to take the path of least resistance.
Imagine you're the very tip of a lightning bolt making its way towards the earth.
To you, it feels as if you're being actively pulled towards the earth. You love the earth. The earth is calling to you.
However, you're being pulled through something that's a lot like a dense forest. Also you're 90% blind. You can only see one step in front of you. So, you evaluate your options: In pretty much every direction it looks like a solid wall. However, there's one tiny little nook that's slightly less solid than the rest. You decide to step in that direction.
Repeat until you hit the ground.

Another way to think of it: imagine you're stuck deep underground in minecraft without a pickaxe. Are you going to punch your way through the solid stone? No, you're going to find a dirt vein and dig through that instead, even though the dirt vein path is a lot more winding, you'll still get back to the surface faster.

since the atmosphere in a thunderstorm is a roiling mass of conductors and insulators, the resistance at any given point at any given time is going to be nearly random. This stochastic effect, combined with the attractive force of the earth, is what causes the zigzag-like paths in the lightning.

What is the tip of the lightning bolt made of?
Is it electrons? Or atoms with abundant electrons losing electrons? Or electrons leaving atoms? Or electrons accelerated into other electrons?

Imagine a crack opening up along a cliff face. What is the tip of that crack made of? Air? Rock?
How does the crack know where to go?
It doesn't. It's just an inherent, intrinsic path implicitly defined by the sum total of all of the weakest points through the rock.

in the lightning's case, it's just like an electric fissure opening up in the atmospheric cliff face. The electrons just rush in to fill the hole.

Lightning travels in a disorderly path because the air is of uneven density and moisture, so dielectric breakdown (where the air ionizes and becomes conductive) happens in many semi-random paths at once. There is a hypothetical technology called an electrolaser that does what you want, though. If you send a strong enough laser pulse through the air, the electric field component of the light gets strong enough (a photon is just a ripple in the electromagnetic field, after all) that the air rips apart and ionizes, becoming conductive. For the split second the pathway is conductive you are free to then send lightning down it and electrocute the everliving fuck out of whatever the laser was pointing at. New Vegas: Old World Blues had one of these, it was called the LAER.

But I'm sure air pockets occur all the time without lightning.

So it's kind of like an unzippering of atoms to their neighbors?

Are the same exact electrons traveling from start to finish?.

Or it's a newton's craddle of electrons?

Is it free electrons?

Or all/mostly electrons locked in atoms?

A cluster of atoms is strongly forced into another and this sends an energetic chain reaction of atoms electrons strongly repelling into atoms electrons and this let's out a lot of light?.

No you really cannot use an electromagnetic phenomena without the proper conditions set up to induce it to exist in the first place. It really doesn't travel from "point a to b". It's "point a and b have to induce the conditions for electromagnetic phenomena to occur".

If you take the strongest permenrant magnets known, into a volume of vacuum in space, and bring their Npole towards the other ones Npole what happens in between them?

But ok, say you have a copper wire in vacuum.
But first you are saying an electric beam cannot be fired in space?

I always read about electron beams in lab experiments in which one assumes or remembers reading experiments are often done in vacuum (I know not as good as space vacuum I think) if you bring those electron beam firing guns into vacuum space;

It won't emit electron beams?

So how is it a "vacuum" when you negate it being a vacuum by doing all these things IN it (the place where nothing is).

A vacuum exists in space, let's say we travel to in-between galaxies, might volume there be vacuum? Or in between solar system?

Or the best vacuums are made on earth?

If you put the items I mentioned in such vacuum spaces, it will still be a vacuum, just with some items in it.

I didn't say I would be in it, I said just a grain of sand.

If there was a 100x 100 yard volume of vacuum, with only a grain of sand in it (or only an electron) describe all the things in that 100 x 100 yard volume?

Would it not be a vacuum, + a grain of sand?

Without the grain of sand it's a vacuum.

With the grain of sand it's..... Space with a grain of sand in it?

With grain of sand it has 0 qualities in common with vacuum?
