I really don't care if you are on the left or the right, (though this may seem contrived.)

When the fuck did "science" become convenient, unassailable, and dogmatic?? Basically all major advancements have been met either by pure accident, or controversial speculation. Some historical prodigies were even executed for their claims, yet now all the sudden "science is settled" among many topics. How does anyone even use this vernacular without being embarrassed??

postdoc here. as far as i can see this went in two stages

stage one: during World War 2 a massive increase in science happened as a government program for the Manhattan Project and the radar research and various other war-related objectives. after the war, the “Big Science” apparatus still existed but it was relegated from the military to a separate bureaucracy. For example, the current US Department of Energy, which funds quite a lot of the ongoing physics research in universities and laboratories today, grew out of the Atomic Energy Commision of WW2 days (basically the Manhattan Project) but was turned into the DOE for political reasons during the oil crisis during the Carter Administration. in other words the military apparatus of using physics to design super weapons was reassigned to the administration of people who care about how much gasoline costs

2) once big science was bureauacratized, and turned into a slow drip-drop of funding to universities mostly, the academic structure (mostly of literature and history idiots) got a role in the doling out of funds for science. so at this present point in history, science is subject to not only a federal governmental bureaucracy but also the bureaucracy of university administrators; neither and none of whom are particularly scientifically literate.

this all leads to the system we have now in science. OMG GRANT APPLICATION IS COMING DUE OKG OMG DIVERT ALL THE GRAD STUDENTS AND POSTDOCS TOWARD THINGS THAT SOUND GOOD TO THE BUREAUCRATS!!!! that happens 10/12 months per year and 6 weeks of the remainder are vacation

the system is rigged toward people doing no work and instead doing bullshit to appeal to getting grant money

Our current understanding of the universe was formulated mathematically in the 1920s, proven conceptually by the 1940s and proven with big space telescopes in the 1960s. Physics had created quantum theory by the 70s and string theory by the 80s. By the time Hubble came around in 1990, most basic questions were answered or at least answered in ways that the average person could understand. For biomedical sciences, DNA's structure was discovered in 1958 and the entire human genome map was created in 2003.

It's hard to create a new mathematical model that completely changes an established, mature topic. Especially with computers becoming so cheap over the past four decades, most revolutions involving basic calculations have already been done.

No modern measurements confirm Kepler’s second law.
