A lot of controversy has arisen surrounding the recent publication of an academic monograph by the University of California press. The book is titled "A Long, Dark Shadow Minor-Attracted People and Their Pursuit of Dignity".
Prof. Leigh Harkins of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology wrote glowing praise about the book, describing it as a "compelling contribution to our understanding of an extremely misunderstood and highly stigmatized group." See

This is going to piss off a lot of ignorant and bigoted people, but of course science has a tendency to do that. People who are ignorant and uneducated tend to fear thing which they don't understand. Well that's just too bad. The science is settled. The is nothing inherently "immoral" about being a MAP, and instead of demonizing and stigmatizing these people, we should seek to understand them, and we should have more respect and admiration for their fortitude and integrity despite being, in the publisher's words a "universally marginalized group".

The author Allyn Walker (they/them) has recently been subject to a far-right harassment campaign by anti-science conspiracy theorists. Thankfully, members of the academic and journalistic community have come out strongly in defense of free speech and academic freedom. Although, she was fired by her tiny no-name university in Virginia in the wake widespread of right wing outrage and harassment of school administrators, thankfully the prestigious Johns Hopkins University almost immediately hired her a postdoc at JHU's Moore Center for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse.

What you fail to understand is that justice, fairness and morality is just an abstraction that allows society to function, until a lefty with a small brain and too much estrogen takes these concepts beyond their limit, unaware of their abstract nature.
When a criminal commits a crime, it's never "his fault" in this abstract (and, nota bene, Judeo-Christian) sense. His actions are always a natural consequence of something, be it nature or nurture. But we still punish criminals, as long as we can assume they were aware of the natural consequences of their actions. We do it, so that other people will be less willing to commit similar actions in the future. Our instincts dictate this tactical behavior by wrapping it in the illusion of "justice". This is exactly the reason why abortion is so controversial among almost all modern societies. There isn't much of a natural precedent that would shape our feelings and behavior in the matter, so we extend our intellectualized concepts of justice and we fail.

The "fault" of a pedo is not relevant. They are as "innocent" of their feelings as a criminal is "innocent" of his actions, yet they have a special category in society, because we instinctively feel different about them then we feel about a thief, and for a good reason. Their desires are repulsive and it's much better to keep them marginalized and distrusted. Let's also not forget the fact that in almost all civilized countries on the planet it's still LEGAL to just have these feelings. But pedos should absolutely be stigmatized and hated, it's natural and it leads to the best outcomes to our wider society. To think their "fault" is relevant is to display an IQ of a lizard. And even if we analyze the issue within our abstraction of what is just, we don't punish them for their feelings, and nobody owns them their compassion or respect.

That being said, I think our policy toward pedophiles should be whatever minimizes the ammount of child sex abuse that happens. If that means jailing them and monitoring them, so be it. If that means encouraging them to seek professional help before they act on their urges, so be it. The right combination of policies is worth debating, but the ultimate goal should be protecting victims (the children), not just punishing pedophiles.
