He seems to know what he's talking about. math sorcerer in youtube

I hope so, Im following his learn all of math video

>> No.14696883

Yes but mainly focuses in making motivational videos and insights for brainlet engineers. His book recommendations are legit tho

>> No.14696892

For those wondering, his answer is Advanced Calculus.

I watched one video where he said "it's okay to not understand." Okay... his audience is clearly engineers. This is literally the opposite of how I approached math by understanding each and every detail one tiny step at a time.

The fact this man has gaps everywhere in his mathematical understanding and is now encouraging others to do the same is. His lack of understanding is a liability that breeds even less understanding down the road.

this guy absolutely hates the thought of being a math major and has put out numerous videos telling his brainlet engineer viewers to never major in math. He is based if only he followed his own advice as now he is larping as a math professor who tells people its okay to not understand things in math

He is a math professor. I’m unsure if he teaches anything more advanced than freshman and sophomore level classes like ODEs and Linear Algebra.

he looks exactly what I expect a mathematician to look like

Now this is a mathematician

It's pretty rare to find a math professor as empathetic as this guy.

yeah.

It would be nice if he would also make some actual math stuff besides first year calculus problems.

>math sorcerer
>never goes beyond first year undergraduate level
it's very sad.

he's not a professor.

No, that'd be Number Theory.

>von neumann tells you it's ok to not understand a maths concept

not having a deep understanding of a research level topic at the cutting edge level is very different to not understanding something at the undergraduate level, which is foundational to any further study.

>> No.14697814

>>14697801
he says it's ok to not understand something meaning that if you get stuck on a concept you should keep going through the textbook or another resource anyway and you will eventually understand the previous concept by being exposed to other ones.
Nobody is saying it's good to never understand how to invert a matrix for the rest of your life or something

>> No.14697827

>>14697795
The type of understanding Von Neumann was talking about was probably 1000x times deeper what this guy knows as understanding. And I watched the video; he did not say to understand it by looking at other sources and scouring around. He said it's okay to not understand and move on.

I think he means that it's ok to not get everything immediately and you have to give yourself time to understand things

Don't care for most of his shit but his vid on the difficulties on self-studying struck a chord with me for sure. I like him for that alone.

>> No.14702131

He makes undergrad math videos, and his motivational videos are based on questions and comments received in his site or by emails.
Math sorcerer has a masters and teaches somewhere in Florida. Id put him on the same tier as professor leonard.

He's a retard who shills (hundreds of reviews with affiliate links in each description) math books without proofs, with nonsense definitions, and 1000+ pages but very few references to any kind of literature.
>but muh 5000+ exercises with answers in the back
Every 100 is copy and paste, and most are questions about the definition, which is probably ill-stated anyway. Maybe the last 3 problems of each section will be worth solving.
>very readable
A portrait of some urban youths playing baseball that take up 90 percent of the page is not what I would call readable.

Von Neumann didn't even know some pretty basic topology, he was a pseud which, like many pseuds, gets shilled by Wikipedia because he has a large nose.
>but mut apocrypha
The one video that exists of him shows 0 evidence of any kind of super genius "memorized A tale of two cities word for word" intellect. He also has a semi-strong accent, which tells you that he either didn't put much effort into learning English or he wasn't good at it. Again, if he had such a memory, he could just memorize an accent.
>Look at his published work
From all he published, he seems comparable to many other mathematicians from, the vast majority of his results are small steps forward in fields that many other people contributed to at the time.
Most likely, he stole work (there is evidence of this) and paid other scientists to put his name on papers and (maybe) to talk big about him.

How many physicists then knew topology and set theory? I doubt even Feynman knew topology. John Nash was friends with Neumann, and when he told Neumann about his discovery that won him the economics nobel prize, Neumann already knew it, but thought it was useless.
