Not really. An asteroid hitting the Earth or the Black Death are fundamentally different phenomenon than the things we're facing at the late stages of the curve.
What's coming now are major issues that care caused by the development itself, issues that themselves grow exponentially and act as destabilizing or limiting factors.
The singularity is far from a forgone conclusion.
