This is what happens when you don't hit children. The dad, in this case, obviously didn't raise the child with any sense of religion, not out of any ideological reason, but simply because getting up to go to a thing each weekend is too hard. The kids becomes a teenager and, like most teenagers, assumes his a priori views make him a unique genius. The dad could tell him he's just a rude shit and solve this behavior, but that would be too confrontational, so he just ignores the kid the way he ignores most things in his life.
