I've been drummening for 25 years this summer (yes, I'm old). I also developed OCD and bipolar, alongside being wicked fuckin' smart. This article gave me pause. To be fair, when I was developing 4-way coordination, it always felt as though I was "breaking" something that may be better left alone.

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/327279

This is an example of the type of mental divorce you must force yourself to make. Playing that loped rhythm with the hands while simultaneously the "Bo Diddly" notes with the foot. Oh, and you need to open the hi-hat every other measure.

https://youtu.be/NMI81yIlT0Q

Akira Jimbo is most drummer's intro to 4-way.
He wrote the book, and by that I mean he made the video. I used to have to buy these things.

https://youtu.be/RDzt12xHIbw

His "speed" is actually an illusion caused by his reliance on linear fills. Basically, he's playing R-L in the hands, immediately followed by 2 kicks. So in its simplest form, the rudiment of R-L-K-K, or R-L-R-R.

Here is an example of linear fill playing taken to its logical extreme (otherwise known as "Gospel Chops")

https://youtu.be/qvu0mZUFHMg

That's as sciencey as I can get about the subject.

Why are you concerned? Greater communication between the hemispheres without control over it is associated with problems, but presumably learning via a musical instrument would prevent that issue, otherwise your rhythm would fall apart. I suspect it's mostly in the motor coordination areas of the corpus callosum anyway.

Because its not just motor control. It obviously employs higher-order thought to be translated down to motor control. Before one can go R-L-R-R, one must visualize it, model it, and then somehow we set it to automatic. There's more going on in the process.

Skip to 1:44 in the last vid I posted and watch his eyes. He's modeling the next hits before he even plays them. There is so much strange give-and take going on in the head when you're playing. Not to mention flow states. Drumming can be a mindfuck. I used to tell people its advanced pat-your-head-and-rub-your-tummy.

Check this out as well. This guy eventually became the drummer for Dream Theater.

This one is great if only for the slowed-down cymbal crashes, if you're a materials guy.
It touches on the brain when they notice that his eyes are a few milliseconds in front of his hands, which is of course to be expected. Even though, when you're really going nuts you can play a whole show with your eyes closed. Sometimes you have to because of sweat.

I don't know, I still think the fact that it's learned in a manner that requires substantial control will prevent any issues. I do understand what you mean, I play piano and have experienced that mind breaking feeling on many occasions. At one point I was practicing/improvising having the melody jump back and forth between the hands while the other would pick up the rhythm, so it required immediate switching of parts. Over the next few weeks, I had a few strange experiences, like throwing away silverware instead of my dirty napkin, leaving something in the microwave (not a big deal, but I'm not usually absent minded), and standing bewildered about which hand to put on my chest during the National Anthem. I suspect my brain was doing some reorganizing, but after those two weeks things returned to normal.

Oh, and another thing I've noticed, and it only happens if I improvise, is I become much better at puzzles afterwards. The effect is short lived, a few minutes to maybe an hour. I suspect improvisation/coordination with both hands (and feet if drumming) temporarily improves the flow of ideas before inhibition takes over again.

>like throwing away silverware instead of my dirty napkin
Yes. I know exactly what you mean.

For a long time I forced myself to work with my non-dominant hand (left). Writing, opening doors, throwing, catching, you name it. A drummer named Derek Roddy said he did the same with his feet. He would play whole shows with his kick on the left just to improve his double-bass.

Piano players really have to make that "divorce." I always took quick to keyboards when I would be hanging around at practice and I suspect it was because I had already put in the coordination work. I know a little theory from playing guitar.

Did you ever bust ass learning a piece only to wake up the next day and play it without difficulty?

Its weird we were having this discussion.

On 60 Minutes they just did a piece on Tony Bennett's last performance. He is fairly badly dementia-stricken and can't even remember where he lives and shit. The piece was about how through working with neurologists and, oddly enough, Lady Gaga, he was able to put a last performance together.

So wherever in the network he's storing the musical cues and keys, its not where he stores how to dress himself or what his wife looks like. I found it terribly relevant to the discussion at-hand.

Music is such a huge insight into consciousness. Here's another example; Glen Campbell was three years from an Alzheimer's diagnosis when he performed here. The degradation had already begun, but look how deftly he performs, even nailing the solo.

This is how propaganda works. And it sounds as if they push opioids to those who came for marijuana, as it literally happened when young russia began to fight drugs in the 90s (those who used to sell weed suddenly began to sell heroin to the cannabis users the same moment government started their campaign vihr-antidrug as for many years they approve opioids even for mild non-threatening allergies, and most countries still don't allow canabis to their citizens, even though few years ago un declassified it giving hope that soon all local clerks catch up
