Is man-made global warming real? It appears that there's a lot of conflicting evidence within the scientific community.

>implying anti-global warming research isn't funded by oil companies
That may be true, but then there were leaked emails from global warming advocates to downplay or silence opposing views. So both sides seem to have vested interests.

I fully expect this thread to be filled with trolls and dipshits, but if any board can provide a half-decent discussion on the issue, it's /sci/.

We simply don't know, using simple consensus (even if it is amongst scientists) is not really scientific because we still don't have good models and proof to adequately predict and explain the phenomena, only give vague indications. And with the politicization of the subject, the research is bogged down in those who seek government grants to simply fund their operation instead of doing research and those that take money to give so-called evidence to the contrary.

All fucking trolls. Global warming is man made. I'm sure a bunch of /sci/fags can appreciate this argument: Global warming is a naturally occuring event - man is changing the rate at which it happens.

There's a strong and strengthening consensus that it is real.

The minority just shouts as loud as their big-corp funded lungs can, to make it seem like the sides are even.

But if you look at the qualifications on both sides, the more qualified people are overwhelmingly on the side of anthropogenic global warming being REAL.

Yes, it is real. A simple experiment to prove it would be to fill a tank (fish, not APC) with CO2 and put dark, -mostly-abiotic dirt in the bottom and obviously seal it. Do the exact same, but use atmospheric gasses (does not work as well if you live in humid or polluted areas) and leave both in the sun on a hot day. The one with CO2 should, theoretically be hotter. man made global warming is a scam, climate fluctuates.

>Global cooling was a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth's surface and atmosphere along with a posited commencement of glaciation. This hypothesis had mixed support in the scientific community, but gained temporary popular attention due to a combination of press reports that did not accurately reflect the scientific understanding of ice age cycles, and a slight downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s.

This is what a third world country has to say about global warming.

>According to Vladimir Shaidurov of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the apparent rise in average global temperature recorded by scientists over the last hundred years or so could be due to atmospheric changes that are not connected to human emissions of carbon dioxide from the burning of natural gas and oil. Shaidurov explained how changes in the amount of ice crystals at high altitude could damage the layer of thin, high altitude clouds found in the mesosphere that reduce the amount of warming solar radiation reaching the earth's surface.

>Shaidurov has used a detailed analysis of the mean temperature change by year for the last 140 years and explains that there was a slight decrease in temperature until the early twentieth century. This flies in the face of current global warming theories that blame a rise in temperature on rising carbon dioxide emissions since the start of the industrial revolution. Shaidurov, however, suggests that the rise, which began between 1906 and 1909, could have had a very different cause, which he believes was the massive Tunguska Event, which rocked a remote part of Siberia, northwest of Lake Baikal on the 30th June 1908.

weather it's anthropogenic or not, why don't we just try to fix it. Restore the forests/stop cutting down more shit, keep our oceans clean, and stop using so much energy.

If we're wrong, we made the earth a very livable and restored its beauty. If we're right, we saved the planet.

I really don't see the problem here.

that has nothing to do with global warming.

how does cleaning up the ocean (pacific gyre par example) reduce 'global warming'?

It requires effort, and some people (read: republicans) are greedy and don't like to help out unless they get something from it.

(Hint: they don't understand anything besides instant pay-off.)

I think the "it" he's referring to is the condition of the environment in general. (And fixing "it" implies a fix of global climate change.)

You can say that someone is a facist, but you cannot say that a government is a fascist. You would have to say that a government is a facist government, and when you say it like that, facist becomes an adjective. This was the source of the previous dispute, when someone used the adjective democratic, and you misconstrued that to be a noun. There is no noun form of the word Fascist used to describe a particular type of state. When the word does describe a state, as in the phrase "fascist state" it is an adjective.

well, as someone said earlier in the thread, the ocean fixes most of the world's co2, so if we keep it healthy, we stay healthy.

Why, what would be benefit from NOT keeping the oceans clean?

how does a clean ocean fix more CO2? its not like we change its volume.

The cleanliness of the ocean has nothing to do with global warming.

The ocean acts a C02 sink as the plant life and bacteria use it in the process of photosynthesis to make energy. By disrupting the oceanic environment, we are hindering it's ability to act as a C02 sink. C02 IS a greenhouse gas, and greenhouse gasses make the earth like a greenhouse, read (trapping sun = hot). Heat = global warming.

I was under the impression that the plants in the ocean do the fixing.

Also, you never answered

am i obligated to answer?

The cost of cleaning up the ocean will bankrupt the world, which depopulate it because no one will be able to afford stuff and food. If nobody buys stuff the economy will never recover, factories wont work, there wont be any man made CO2 and i guess it will fix the global warming problem.

Clearly, you didn't read the question. Here is how you answered

>The cost of cleaning up the ocean will bankrupt the world...........

First off [citation needed]. Second, the question was,

>what do we benefit from NOT KEEPING them
clean?

As in, if we keep dumping toxic chemicals/over fishing, what does the world benefit from this?

Healthy planet> fish and industry.
