ITT: /sci/ things that were just memory-holed after being touted as world-ending catastrophes, and zoomers probably haven't even heard of:

- The hole in the ozone layer
- Acid rain
- Nuclear Winter
- Y2K
- Various oil spillages that will take "centuries" to clear (they're already clear)
- Stem Cell research being a contentious matter.

What else am I missing?

>> No.14580710

>>14580649
The hole in the ozone actually has closed up thanks to a coordinated global effort to ban the use of CFCs, the propellant chemical once used in air conditioners and spray cans.

Acid rain is still very much a thing it just hasnt changed much since the 1800s so not exactly news.
Nuclear winter is moot as we've averted the realistic threat of nuclear war, y2k was always just a meme, and the oil spills still have fucked the ecosystems but again its just continually fucked and not news.

Stem cell research was never contentious, the debate was about using embryonic stem cells from aborted fetuses which afaik is still banned, stem cell research has actually made huge progress in certain things like healing burns but is ofc not the miraculous panacea it was represented as by liberals.

>- The hole in the ozone layer
it is there, but global ban of CFCs managed to limit the size to Antarctica and sometimes Southern Australia as it's kinda swirling vortex that gets bigger and smaller with weather
still, 2 in 3 Australians get diagnosed with some kind of melanoma
>- Acid rain
desulfurization of oil, home heating with coal getting rare and and mandatory flue gas scrubbers solved it for the most part
- Nuclear Winter
at this point, it would be good at offsetting global warming for a while, I suppose
>- Y2K
right, that one got solved entirely
>- Various oil spillages that will take "centuries" to clear (they're already clear)
people underestimated the effects of relatively rare bacteria (that are now considerably less rare)
still, a huge financial loss in spoiled fish and such every time it happens
>- Stem Cell research being a contentious matter.

Although OP's original plan backfired, I think there are 2 things we can extract/discuss from this thread:
1. A few months ago I was wondering the same thing about the ozone layer, thinking "what happened to it anyway? Did it get fixed, is it still getting destroyed... why is no one talking about it?". When I was a kid it was almost as if it was gonna end humanity if we didn't do something about it, that's the perception I remember having during my classes. In fact, global warming was a big deal back then, but not as much as the ozone layer. Now, I think it's great that the CFC ban fixed the issue, but if that's the case, why didn't the media AT ANY POINT SINCE THEN mention it? Are they really just interested in making money out of controversies? Not only that, but if the ozone layer problem was so easily fixed, why isn't the media using that as evidence that we can tackle climate change if we want to?

That leads me to the second point:
2. If all it took was a ban on CFCs, why is it so hard to find a solution to climate change? Yes I know some of the things you're gonna say: the oil industry buying politicians, lobbying, the issue getting mixed with the left-right conflict as if it was a concern only for one group... BUT my main point is that the nature of the general problem is the same: Scientists point out a problem that could harm the world in a meaningful way, and the solution requires some people to stop making money from the cause of the problem (in this case, CFCs). So, how did it succeed? Was the CFC industry so minuscule that they couldn't buy enough politicians? Or was is just because there were alternatives that got the job done as well as CFCs, so trading one for another wasn't such a hassle for the companies involved? [1/2]

>> No.14581277

>>14581276
In fact, an interesting question just occurred to me: If the alternative to CFCs was 10 or even 100 times more expensive for the companies that used CFCs in their products, do you think we would still be debating whether or not CFCs were actually responsible for the hole in the ozone layer? I'm really inclined to believe that, unfortunately. [2/2]

CFCs didn't stop making anyone money, DuPont just switched from R12 to R134 which was 1400x worse than CO2 for global warming but better for the ozone layer, then switched to 1234YF when people started talking about climate change more. 1234YF doesn't put holes in the ozone layer or reflect heat as much as CO2, but it does degrade and hang around in drinking water lmao

Nuclear winter is based on fires so huge ash blocks out a significant amount of sunlight. Seeing houses have filled with plastics since it was first proposed I imagine it would still happen.
What a lot of people don't understand about it is it only lasts a couple of years and long term there is even more global warming as the particulate falls out and a fuckload of CO2 was released by the fires.

Hole in ozone still a thing no one cares about it because its shrinking
Acid rain is a thing just not so much an issue in America as it was. Coal was the main cause
Y2k was fixed before it caused any issues for most things
Oil spillage taking centuries to clean up is a meme. You can clean up most of it pretty quickly

This is like saying your weight periodically goes up and down, therefore obesity has little to do with your diet and activity. The main cause of ozone depletion is human emissions.
