This is a straightforward question. I'm just trying to check my math here.

Approximately how long would it take for light to travel from New York City to London? Assuming it's moving at c

Doesn't the opacity of the earth itself prevent this? It would have to travel in a great circle, not a straight line. Unless there's some umbra/penumbra stuff I'm not thinking through. Also the travel would occur in the neighborhood of the earth's atmosphere, and not in a (near) vacuum which is usually the environment where c is discussed.
