If I chopped off my hand, that hand is not a human. If I removed my foot, that foot is not human. If a coma patient is braindead, 0 ability to regain consciousness, then they are not alive, they are dead. Fetal cells are not alive, they are a human precursor, no inherent consciousness. I don't even think babies gain consciousness until at least a year, actually.

Murder is inconvenient for a functioning economy. Murder of kids less so, but if they are born already they represent a significant sunk cost for the family and society as a whole. Particularly in times when death in childbirth is likely.

Babies aren't very valuable if childbirth is safe - they can be easily replaced - but birth presents a convenient place to draw the legal distinction between "clump of cells" and "member of society with legal protection".
