In it's real world application, depending on the specific context and interpretation of the system in question, it could yield anything from 0 (2 positive charges + 2 negative charges), 1 (2 water droplets + 2 water droplets forming into 1 larger droplet), 2 (2 socks + 2 socks into 2 pairs of socks), 3 (2 bundles of clothes + 2 boxes of shoes into 3 full outfits), 4 (the usual case), etc...

It doesn't equal anything besides collectively agreed social constructs. Separate individual things don't truly exist meaning math is impossible, it's basically just a mirage or hallucination of what we vaguely believe makes 'sense' or will lead us to success in our infinitely short human lives.

People use math because it results in energy, but anything that can create energy is automatically right in any scenario. I think that's all there is too it, people who use math obtain 'energy' from it, rewards and success within society, if math gave you no success then it wouldn't exist. I don't think math exists whether or not it brings us success, things that can't create energy inherently don't exist. So I don't believe that a maths that won't result in happiness or success exists. So maths is the order and laws of the universe we use to obtain success/energy. The energy itself can absolve all differences between maths though, meaning 2 + 2 = 3 as long as I get rewarded, if I'm punished then its wrong.
