AIDS does require HIV to get. That's not saying there aren't other immune system ailments or diseases. It's just that clinically, AIDS refers to a specific cell that HIV targets for reproduction. When the virus is saturated enough in your blood, it kills off the cells quite quickly leading to a low cell count. If you could somehow get every single particular HIV out of your body then eventually your cell count would return to normal and your AIDS would more or less just fade away, assuming nothing else kept the cells from being in your system.
