Hey /sci/, I'm an engineering student, so don't bash me too much if what I'm asking is extremely stupid.
How do leukocytes "work"? Can they actually detect threats? Or they just float around in the bloodstream until they "crash" against a potential target?
I'm quite confused, to be honest.

Any recommended book? Nothing too technical, please.

In a way they "roll" along the blood vessels, anchored there. If there is a foreign substance in a cell, it induces a change in the signalling molecules which leukocytes detect. They then "flatten" and exit the blood vessels to go into the cell where they engulf the foreign substance

/sci/ doesn't look kindly upon engineering. Personally I don't see why, but there we go.

As far as the question goes, I assume you're talking about phagocytes (leukocyte can mean B and T cells as well).
In short, entry of bacteria or whatever cause chemical messenging, which makes the local blood vessels more permeable to larger molecules (vasodilation). Phagocytes move from blood to intersitial fluid, engulf bacteria, everyone's happy 'cept those naughty bacteria.
