Why would this be somehow amazing or non-biological? To an ant colony this is the equivalent of a human being shedding a couple of arm hairs in defense of the rest of the body.

This just in, sometimes, in fact pretty often, an organism develops traits and behaviors to facilitate the survival and continued propagation of the species or social group as a whole, instead of itself individually.

Unless we're approaching this from the "electricity is god's magic, and unknowable to mere humans" angle, of course.
