A thought; what would the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere have to be to allow people to sit with their mouths open and not have to actively breathe?

Or would carbon dioxide build up too fast while a person's body is inactive besides a few keystrokes for diffusion to cover it?

What does /sci/ think?

you are a negative pressure breathing organism.

your scenario is impossible.

Lies.

The oxygen would still have to get into your lungs, it won't just blow down there.

It doesn't have to blow - gases diffuse to equal concentration in all sections of a contiguous volume naturally. Carbon dioxide diffuses out if there isn't a pressure gradient, and oxygen back in. So in a sense, it does.

I'll prove it. Hold your breath with your mouth closed and your nose pinched. Wait until your vision blurs slightly - take note of the time.

Now do it with your mouth and nose open. Take note of the time.

I'm basically wondering if we HAVE to use negative pressure to provide our bodies with oxygen. It's really not a hard concept to grasp.

Damn. It's actually fucking hard to hold your mouth and throat open without breathing.
