Playing devils advocate here, but if you read the bible, koran, and look at the various cultures around the world and reinterpret religion as myths and fables retelling encounters with an advanced alien species [Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic] it's easy to see how people can think ancient aliens exist.

There's a passage in the koran where an angel tells muhammad that the affairs on earth travel to God within a day, which is equivalent to 12000 of their months. When you do the math, this comes to be pretty much exactly the speed of light, only rounded up in the tenths decimal place.

From the general gist of it - Aliens arrive/discover earth maybe 15 thousand years ago or so. They're grossly appalled by how barbaric and savage we are, and two camps form - one side wants to guide humanity, and the other side wants to let us grow on our own. Humanity sees a little bit of help from them, but the side of non-interference wins out and for a few thousand years [Well, up to the present anyways] they just watch to see if we can establish our own moral code and put an end to our senseless violence.
