Hey /sci/. Quick question. In terms of job prospects, which is a more valuable degree: chemistry or biochemistry?

chemistry teaches you how to use all the elements.

biochemistry only teaches you how to use 4 of them.

you do the math.

Technically speaking, the more general the study probably the most job prospects out there. (Disregard Mathematics post).

However, some specific fields, could offer bigger pay or job prospects depending on the inflow of people willing to study/work and the outflow of those done with the field.

Ehhh.. I'd say Chemistry. Then again, fuck chemistry.

I work in a biochemistry lab and most people that work with me are chemists.
Go for chemistry.

I did chem for my undergrad, about to go to grad school though. My undergrad research advisor said typically a bachelors will start at around 40-50k and almost invariably will be a lab tech. A masters will bump you up another 10-20k. A PhD in academia will start generally around 65-70k, but if you get tenure benefits and pay increases totally make up for it. I plan on going into industry. Organic and polymer PhDs can expect to make close to six figures, analytical a little less. Inorganic is in less demand and with Physical... I'd get a physics degree honestly if you're going that route.

Dunno about biochem

Nice, thanks for the info. So... With a PhD, do you pretty much have to go into academia then?

So... What if you do a PhD but then don't go into academia? Wait, is there even any point in doing that?

All of that applies to industry, industry makes much more starting out

Ah yeah, sorry, guess I just can't read or something. So... Why would anyone want to stay in academia after their PhD then?
