Can someone intelligent please explain the holographic principle in layman's terms?

You know what a hologram is op? A flat image that looks three dimensional?

Its pretty much self explanatory. Its just the latest screwy idea those crazy unreasonable scientists have come up with to explain other things they don't understand, in this case black holes.

A beam is split and shot at a holographic plate (reference beam), and at an object. The light reflects off of the object onto the holographic plate to produce a light intereference pattern, which is recorded on the plate. To reproduce the image, a reference beam must be fired at the plate at the same position and angle as it was recorded, and the 3D image will appear.
