This may make you appreciate engineering. It may make you hate it. Regardless, it remains undoubtedly impressive.

Development of the Athabasca Oil Sands is the largest industrial undertaking in history. Oil production capacity in Alberta has increased by 1 million barrels a day in the last decade, is set to increase by 4 million barrels a day in the next two: this is equivalent to a new Iran. A new Iran in 20 years time, in terms of oil production, let that sink in. Two new Europes in thirty years by the same metric.

Typically, throughout history, oil production equipment was one-off and build on the site it would operate. For the first time in history, this precedent has been broken. Oil upgrading equipment (different from refining; upgrading converts bituminous sands into crude, which still requires refinement) is build in assembly-line fashion in Edmonton, and transported piece by piece into place, like an Erector Set. The scale of this project is simply unfathomable.

Pictured, a common sight on northernly Alberta highways.

That's the same sort of tl;dr version that news magazines write about hard science: far from the point. The trucks are on small cog in a vast machine.

The Big Dig was projected to cost $3 billion. It eventually cost $22 billion. Capital expenditures in the Oil Sands are in excess of $20 billion per year for a foreseeable 50 consecutive years or more - and that's not including workers salaries or operating costs.

Irving Reed (L) and Gustave Solomon (R) who invented the Reed-Solomon error correction codes. Ironically, they published RS codes in 1960, before they were computationally feasible, and before US patent law would have let them effectively patent an algorithm as a "system and method".

But today RS codes are EVERYWHERE:
