quick question:
why do electrons go into different energy levels?

>> No.1369779

maximize distance between them.

they all have the same charge.

>> No.1369786

with photons knocking on them and shit they'll lose and gain energy (quantized) occasionally

>> No.1369787

Are you asking why the energy levels are quantized?

>> No.1369792

You mean, why are there discrete energy levels, or why does an orbital only get two electrons?

>> No.1369808

>>1369792
discrete energy levels

>> No.1369812

OP, get that Bohr model piece of shit off /sci/.

It is incorrect. It is the largest falsity in chemistry still taught to students and the public.

sorry just googled "atom"
what is it more like?

Orbitals, OP. Orbitals.

>> No.1369824

Cuz I accidentally them all at the beginning of time

well thanks to all from a curious engineeringfag

>> No.1369839

>>1369808
Well, you can derive it from quantum mechanics. Do you know any quantum mechanics?

>> No.1369852

Fucking Pauli Exclusion Principle, how does it work?

>> No.1369856

>>1369839
nope all engineering here

quantized energy levels are because the electron wave function forms standing waves and can therefore only exist as integer multiples.

>> No.1369881

>>1369856
How about waves in general?

Generally when waves are free to propagate anywhere, you get a continuous spectrum of frequencies. But if you confine them to a certain region, only certain frequencies are allowed. The frequency of the electron's wavefunction is the electron's energy.

to tell you the truth i havent leanred much since highschool

but that makes sense i guess
