Last night I went to a beach party and converted loads of people to science. Had a big group around me hanging off my every word. Even the spiritual hippy changed from being a science-hater. Some chick even said "oh I love math!" (fuck that was hot)

science, fuck yeah. inspiring wonder and awesomeness.

Did you regale them with tales of particles and wavefunctions, or serenade them with songs of differential geometry and complex analysis?

OP said beach party, so I'm guessing he strung a bunch of quantum buzzwords together

>> No.1323006

Or astronomy. Chicks love astronomy.

That's not a hydroxyl ion, that's my wife!

Sounds like he did. You fucking jock or troll.

Yeah, astronomy and life basically. Normally I just fuck around and can't be bothered to educate people, but I thought this time I'd try since I keep reading on /sci/ about how ignorant the populace is.

I don't think it's true. People can be really appreciative of nature's beauty if you're not a bumbling aspie

Wait what how did that happen? Did you just walk in and said "Sup bros who wants to learn about Quantum Optics?"

I'm thinking this is spot on. The conversion was to SCIENCE! rather than science.

tl;dr how did that happen. WITH DETAILS

For starters I'm a good public speaker. I used to speak at conferences a lot and get on well with people.

Still want me to detail anything?

Reminds me of, http://www.physicsforums.com/showthread.php?t=410311
>>the significance of, say, studying the metallicity content of a certain group of M-dwarf flare stars that are in this bubble in the Milky Way?

Too often I read about people here being sad that people aren't into science. Probably since they launch into minutiae without giving them context- why they are epic or cool.

I also don't talk about the common regurgitated stuff in popsci, but small things I really like and have combed to my personal database. Then I express it with enough passion.

everyone generally approves of science. its just the doom sayers on sci

This just reeks of stupidity.
You mean to tell us that you have a breadth of scientific knowledge, yet your social circle is full of new wavers and creationists? We're to believe that your mastery of public speaking "converted" these people from believing in god, astrology, creationism, etcetera - the kind of shit that idiots hold onto with a vice-like death grip - in the span of a day's worth of socializing?

You're either trolling, or you and your friends are eleven-year-olds.

Or those kinds of people will believe ANYTHING that a confident person who sounds like they know what are talking about tells them... for a week or so, at least, until they find someone else to explain the universe and everything for them.

im still curious...let's hear some examples from your "personal database" that we can use to convert others at our local beach parties.
