Just speaking about here in the Netherlands. I'm on a 'free' college, and the classes just suck. I mean, the quality of education in the Netherlands is wack. Weird 'confirmed-by-law' structures to make students up for their exams, but the real in-depth views on science isn't a subject at all.

If I found out earlier that things like math and physics were awesome, i would have chosen it, but the way my (and many other schools here) treat subjects like that, wouldn't inspire anyone.

If you just want a decent wage then becoming a plumber actually makes more sense than a scientist.

I agree with OP's pic for trade school bros.

My job will ALWAYS be....a job...and nothing more.

The debt will be minimal.
School will be easier and the process will be shorter in length.

You get hands on experience which is what you need more than anything. Theoretical work is ALL in books you can pick up from the library and nothing is stopping you from doing that.

Those jobs also tend to have straight schedules where you do what you have to do...then get out.

Work is work...and when you leave...you live your life.

I agree that if all you want is a well paying job then becoming a plumber is a better choice than becoming a scientist. (better wages and less debt) But some people just love science and want to make a contribution to mankind.

I think OP's post was aimed more towards the people that go into science and then complain that they get paid poorly.

People are fucking retarded. A trade school is usually a postsecondary school (although sometimes part of a high school or (more often) affiliated with one) that teaches a particular trade. They exist for job-specific training with little emphasis on science, mathematics, or liberal arts.

Then study engineering.

Working in a trade will give you a good background in tool use and working with others in industry. You can then get a degree or even a masters in engineering via night school or correspondence courses no debt and and in the end it pays far more than even a high end trade would.

I don't see why I can't emulate the knowledge of a physics degree by just reading the books involved with the class.

The truth is that engineering isn't flooded. If you have a engineering degree you will always be able to find work. Although the extremely high wages that engineers get may start to drop if lots of people graduate.

The one field this is an exception in is petroleum engineering... that goes through some serious ups and downs.

Anyway, what /sci/ sometimes mistakes is formal education and academia as being the only way for the intelligent guy. Something which is obviously false. sure is butthurt in here, from both sides.

The underlying issue is, college has been fagged out by liberals for the past 30 years. Unless your planning on majoring in a hard science or engineering, there is really no reason to waste that much time and effort. Better to just go to a trade or vocational school. Its much more economical that way.

Heyas, I've been to both. I took an AMT course at a local tech school, then eventually majored in CS at a state uni. I can say from personal experience, I walked away from tech school with more applicable knowledge than I did the uni. Also, trade wages are nothing to scoff at. A lot of these guys work their ass off and are payed DAMN well for it. Its a legitimate option if you're a hands on type of person.
