Ok guys, I have been having a running argument with one of my friends about quantum mechanics, and I am running out of ammunition. He says that in terms of visually interpreting reality quantum theory presents "interference patterns" which seem to prove the wave theory of light (he's making some very valid points), kind of like illustrated in the picture. What would you say is the best response to this argument?

What do you mean? He's entirely correct, the interference patterns observed in Double Slit experiments do prove the wave theory of light. However, light also behaves as a quanta of energy (see Photoelectric effect). So light behaves as waves and particles.

Well throughout history scientific "modernity" has always bashed less "modern" theories and tried to perpetuate itself (I could list off countless examples, but I'm not going to) to the point where it becomes almost militaristic. This "modernity" is always overcome by a new, better fitting, (usually) map of reality. Thus the idea of "post-modernism," or striving to achieve a new modernity and not cling so desperately to what you're familiar with due to a fear of change (or other similar primal biological survival mechanism.)
