Hey /sci/ I have a question, I think it's pretty basic but meh..

If the distance from Earth to other stars or planets is, for example 50 light years, wouldn't that mean we're seeing these stars as they were 50 years ago, so if the planet or star were to explode right now, wouldn't that mean we'd only see it's explosion 50 years later?

>> No.1282143

right, and people from that point of view would see the earth in 1960 if they were to view us from a telescope

>> No.1282171

>50 light years

>1960

ITT: light year=regular year

since we use light to see things and light is the fastest thing anyway... yes light years = years we see in the past

free protip: a light year is not as long as a regular earth year

365.25 days.
It's approx. one earth year. Fuck off.

A LIGHT YEAR IS A MEASURE OF SPACE NOT TIME YOU FUCKING MOTHER FUCK

>> No.1282216

Lightyears are measured based on how long a year is at the point relative to you. A star is X number of lightyears from Earth, but it would be Y number of lightyears from jupiter because of the different orbits.

moran.
read second post and first post with a grammarnazi eye.
2010-1960=50 YEARS.
fags don't understand, obviously.

I understand, retard. 50 years into our past is what people on 50 lightyear away planet would see if they looked at us.

no, one light year is the distance light travels in a vacuum in 365.25 days. One day being 86,400 seconds.

OP is correct. OP is curious about a basic fact, that doesn't mean he's retarded.
