ITT: Weed = you will die and be unhappy your entire life, i know this because i have never done a substance harder than chocolate milk.

>> No.1282181

I work in a lab that studies THC, it is a hydrophobic molecule that binds to metabotropic endocannabinoid receptors derived from phospholipids in the CNS. They produce an inhibitory effect in the synapse like GABA. Endocannabinoid receptors have been found outside the CNS in the PNS and other areas. They have a body wide INHIBITORY effect on physiology and cell signaling. And because they are lipophilic they cross the membrane without the need for vesicular transport.

What is interesting about them is that they are retrograde messengers, meaning they carry signals from the postsynapse to to the CB1 receptors on the presynaptic cell.

What this means is that THC 'turns off' parts of the brain very rapidly and pervasively. OP's picture is a sort of PET that demonstrates the inhibition in the brain.

Yes, weed is dangerous and it does make you stupid.

Just to add on about ethanol. Ethanol is an antagonist for GABAa Cl- receptor channels. So are benzodiazepines and barbiturates. They also have an inhibitory effect on the brain, BUT they are not retrograde, or significantly membrane permeable. THC does inhibit a greater range of neurons.

Non-sequitur and all round bad conclusion. Inhibition =/= 'bad' or 'stupid' making.

The inhibition is temporary anyway.

Sorry, showed up late

Are all these tests/scans/images about marijuana use performed when the subject is under the influence or has recently smoked? Or are any depicting a smoker who has abstained for some time (more than 30 days, 3 months later, etc.)

>> No.1282353

>>1282317
I didn't say long term, under influence it decreases long term plasticity in memory function and it inhibits many other pathways. It does make you stupid, and inhibition of motor reflexes makes it dangerous (especially considering many people think it is OK to drive while stoned).

I'm not saying don't do it. I used to smoke pot and shoot coke and heroin in my youth. I'm just telling you how it is, from what we know.

You're not going to get a proper answer since all these pictures are without source. Still, if the scans were comparisons between non-smokers and ex-smokers the pictures would mean jack-shit because individual differences are so great that comparing individual people lead to differences anyway. Only some group averaging would have any meaning but these pictures say "(ab)user" and not "(ab)users"

The substance in itself isn't 'bad' (unlike coke), it's irresponsible use that leads to bad consequences.

By your definition no substance is bad, because it acts on receptors of endogenous ligands. We term the effects of THC as a 'sledgehammer effect' because it takes that endogenous system and does what it's not supposed to do and explodes.

lolno.

My definition of 'bad' for the brain would be that the substance can cause increased cell death, or a substantial, lasting, reduction in neurogenisis. Neither have been shown (to my knowledge) to be the case with THC or related molecules.

It doesn't cause any other deleterious effects in the body either (unlike coke, which accumulates in sinoatrial node neurons causing heart rhythm abnormalities with long term use).

From my experience (I know I'm going to get shit for saying that) it will definitely impair your motivation and concentration, but it is not all bad.

I was a pretty heavy smoker for about 7 months. It was my freshman year of college, I had a lot of time on my hands and some cash to burn. I definitely noticed that my "drive" had gone way down. Wake up, smoke, play videogames, eat, etc. I skipped a lot of my classes, BUT school was still important so I always kept up with the work. It's hard to say for sure, but I didn't feel any stupider from smoking/while smoking. In fact, I toked and did my homework on a regular basis.

I'm a bit of a nerd, though, and it affects everyone different. For me, smoking and then doing calculus and studying physics was mind-blowing, and I also got through the material pretty quickly. Marijuana will make you realize so many connections you probably would have missed, and it generally made me appreciate everything so much more. "What? How is this monitor working? Electrons being controlled with a magnetic field and shot a piece of glass?! Whoaaaa.... shit, I gotta learn more" Is sort of what my thoughts were like (yes, that explanation about cathode ray tubes sucked).

I've stopped smoking since then, and my concentration and short-term memory are back to normal (well, as far as I know). It's difficult to say what could have been: people are going to protest, "But you could have done better, and got more involved, and done more, and...", but I got a 4.0 that year, was involved in several student organizations, and met a lot of groovy people. I have a better appreciation of life and music, and enjoyed one of the most fun experiences ever.

Take that as you will.
