yo engineers,

is nanotechnology gonna be the next big thing any time soon? I'm wondering if i should major in something like it in case lots of jobs open up in the near future

you should try being a gay prostitute

I hear there's a huge market for that in the engineering community.

Nanotech is going to change our world someday.

There are already lots of nanotech products out in the market actually, but even so, we are basically in the matchlock-rifle stage of development, even though we can see where this is going and what we might be able to expect when we're at the railgun stage of equivalent development breakthroughs.

However we cannot always be sure of nanotech's future. A few years ago I attended a symposium at one of UC Davis' labs and some cool duderinos presented some research that very much suggested that they directly observed various nanoparticles doing incredible damage to bacteria in the soil when tested. Granted, the particles they tested were exotic molecules that bound up already-toxic elements in ways that we thought would inactivate them biologically.. but well, turns out no, they're still bad. Also aerosol form of nanotech could cause some problems with buildup in lungs. How weird our world would be if in say, 50-100 years, a new human disease has to be documented.. lung damage from inhaling chronic numbers of airborne nanobots.. that kind of thing.

I'm not trying to scare you though, the near-magical-sounding potential of nanotech makes it a no-brainer for looking at something that's gonna get big soon. Which it totally is.. there's been lots of hype over nanotech for decades, but, today we're finally starting to see some demonstrable real-world applications from it.

but we could just build more nanobots to clean out the lungs that are full of too many other nanobots!
