You’re going to laugh at me, but what’s the most realistic way I could go to space in my lifetime?

I’m 25, and about to go back to college (messed up the first time around; was aimless and didn’t even try). I’m going to study physics and astronomy. I then plan to join the Air Force as a pilot before I’m too old.

While in the Air Force I’ll pursue my master’s and hopefully PhD.

checked. Honestly, your best bet is learning to code.

That's a meme, and it sounds retarded, but I was a wagie with a useless degree for most of my adulthood and then my bf taught me to code. Now we made a startup, and we just cleared series B funding. Getting enough money for financial escape velocity is a good bet for being able to grow your wealth to the point where it keeps growing on its own. From there, you can buy tickets or even invest in space stations.

I'm not laughing anon, nobody in this general is going to laugh at you. I'm 28 and entirely plan on getting to space. Here's how I plan to do it:
>graduate with my clinical psychology phd in the next three years
>get a research position at a university
>create a lab dedicated to space psychology
>spend literally all of my free time making connections in the space industry to get access to private astronauts
>invest 25% of my income into solid cryptocurrencies (doing that now)
>by the time SpaceX brings spaceflight to the masses in the next 10-20 years, I'll have the connections to warrant going to space, the legitimate interest, and plenty of money to fund my own ticket
For you, I'd recommend just getting a good job that makes you useful here on earth and saving a lot of money. The moment space becomes cheap due to Starship, jump on the opportunity. Space colonies, especially colonies on Mars, will need people good at all sorts of things. Trying to become a pilot in the Air Force is great and would be a fantastic job, but it likely won't get you to space that much faster if I'm being honest. Learning physics and astronomy may also be cool, but still not that advantageous. If you want the best shot at getting into space, I'd recommend being actually useful. That means software engineering, real world engineering, medicine, electrical, plumbing, greenhouse agriculture, you get the idea.
Also bro, invest in crypto.

I watched Interstellar again it got me thinking about how incredible interstellar travel will be. Imagine looking up at an alien sky. Watching the sunset of a star that isn’t the Sun. Watching a colony grow on a world trillions of miles from home. It’s insane. Of course even in our lifetimes we will probably never see it. Wormholes don’t exist. I think we’ll probably be able to go to Mars before we die, but no further. Maybe our kids will go to Jupiter. But seriously one day someone will make the trip to another star, and it’ll be the biggest part of human history since the invention of the wheel.

Saturn V has come and gone, SLS hasn't launched yet. Replacing the seemingly expendable 1bn launch tower is another cost to add up. Seeing how JWST has been allowed to reach costs that are half of a super-heavy launcher, I'm sure it's too early to give too much importance to the 18bn figure.

People are willing to do that if they see NASA not do the same crap as they've been doing for 30 years.

NASA should be pushing for fuel depots, make the work open source so we can get 2 or 3 fuel depots in LEO, which would create competition and better accommodations so we would see the transition from fuel depots to full fledged space truck stops.

Why not defund the maritime, rail, aviation, or automobile industries to "feed the poor"? Because those industries serve an important role in the economy of the country, and their defunding would inflict much more harm than good even if the money from their budgets were used in purely humanitarian ways. So why treat the space industry differently? It too serves critical roles in the economy and security of this nation. Navigation, communication, resource monitoring, material research, and so much more. Even more importantly, it is a budding industry with untapped potential, and whoever can access that potential the fastest and most effective will have great influence over space industries in other countries. It is simply imperative to nurture this growing industry to reap the benefits that could help much more people later, than just sending extra scraps to them now.

>So why treat the space industry differently? It too serves critical roles in the economy and security of this nation.
Not nearly as much as the shipping industries you mentioned. Also Space assets require less upkeep and management then roads, rails etc. and there are just a lot less space assets then roads and rails to manage/upkeep. Losing Space assets also has less of an immediate impact then having shipping halt or slow down.
>it is a budding industry with untapped potential, and whoever can access that potential the fastest and most effective will have great influence over space industries in other countries.
Unfortunately, not really. There is very little actual profit or benefit that comes from space assets that don't directly related to earth based life. There's no real reason for a government to leave LEO other then bragging rights and knowledge for the sake of knowledge.
>It is simply imperative to nurture this growing industry to reap the benefits
I agree, but the benefits won't come from the space industry. The benefits will come from horizontally available industries developing new tech to be used in space. The hard part is getting to a place where those new technologies can be developed and used cheaply, which looks like a massive money sink to anyone not paying close attention.

Fuel depots would be great because you wouldn't be so time constrained. You could fill up the depot a year or more ahead of a mission to Mars, then there's only a single docking required to send people to Mars.

With Fuel depots you could shuttle people to the moon with smaller class sized rockets.

Lefties would cry out but we're talking hundreds of billions to trillions of dollars being sent to Mars. Right now all NASA wants is a glorified flag planting mission.

Nobody is talking about sending actual nuclear reactors to Mars with mega-wattage capacity. With underground tunnels you could support tens of thousands of people for the short term. Yes it would be nice to build domed structures, but that's material you have to ship in, and it's unlikely individuals would gain meaningful private apartments to unwind in.

The military doesn't run on magic. There is practically no reason. I can legitimately think of only one. Mars training grounds. Military buys a ton of territory for a small base. To train elite operatives on rotation on operations in low g enviroments, as well as learning how to operate vehicles in adverse conditions. (though you can already get a lot of this kind of thing.)

Other than training there are no real objectives. I mean similar things can be done in the arctic desu. The military doesn't move on a whim. It would take serious institutional momentum. Space Race is also genuinely considered a demilitrized zone. Relatively speaking.

NASA flag planting mission is the best kind of instutitional support current politics permits. There is just not a large enough support base. Which is why Elon is such a relative e-whore.
#1 Political Elite don't find it meets their objectives.
#2 Doesn't make anyone richer
#3 No Strategic objectives, unlike the moon which can be built out into a massive deep space port
#4 There is no real support in the broad public. It's not a political issue or fear.

So it becomes an altruism project, and maybe an escape hatch for a few crazy enough people. It's a desert. You also have a hard time selling this land for practical purposes.

Would be dank if you could build out the theory that nukes where used based on that speculative work of whoever the fuck that guy was. But genuinely this is a hard sell. It's very very high risk.

Not really. All systems are vulnerable to ideological thinking, particularly when said ideology affects things that don't represent(or are not perceived to represent) a direct threat to the goals of the real powerbrokers.
You can look at something like the athenian invasion of Syracuse, which was heavily supported by the people but would serve no practical purpose even if it succeeded.

Burgers claim their system as being based around the popular will of the people. The only thing that would be undemocratic about would be the electoral college, albeit its current incarnation was already being decried by the founding fathers as a corruption of the original constitutional intended two centuries ago, and pretty much everyone nowadays treat it purely in terms of whatever it helps the blue team or the red team ie it is perceived purely in terms of a powerplay rather than an actual mechanism.

I don't want to make you more anxious, you should probably believe he made that knowing his thing, but there's absolutely no certainty when it comes to crypto—hardly any coin is backed by anything and most are just trying to fake it till they make it. Discord is slightly above reddit, in terms of shittiness and cringe. It's only saving grace is that it doesn't have a vote system. Discord is fucking stupid. You join a server and you get bombarded with thousands of rules. "don't curse" "don't say this" "don't say that". It's overwhelmingly liberal. Not to mention the fact that all of its users are weebs and freaks, pedophiles, and children. Emojis permeate discord. And discord users are so fucking stupid they have to add "/s" any time they say something sarcastic because the average idiot there is too dumb to understand when people are joking or being serious

Why doesn't /sfg/ create a subreddit either? Because it would be stupid. Besides, discord would split /sfg/ up into too many niche topics. For example, channels would probably be dedicated to nuclear propulsion, starship, boeing news, shitposting, etc. Some channels would get neglected and it would just be retarded overall. We already have a forum format here and if someone says something niche but interesting, people talk about it. If someone says something stupid, everyone is free to ignore them or call them a fag.

>Publicly, in the early and mid-2010s, proponents of the large SLS rocket were critical of depots because they asserted the technology was not ready for prime time. Then-NASA Administrator Charles Bolden also said the agency could not plan its exploration plans around the Falcon Heavy and propellant depots because the SpaceX rocket was not a real rocket.
>"Let's be very honest again," Bolden said in a 2014 interview. "We don't have a commercially available heavy lift vehicle. Falcon 9 Heavy may someday come about. It's on the drawing board right now. SLS is real. You've seen it down at Michoud. We're building the core stage. We have all the engines done, ready to be put on the test stand at Stennis... I don't see any hardware for a Falcon 9 Heavy, except that he's going to take three Falcon 9s and put them together and that becomes the Heavy. It's not that easy in rocketry."
>SpaceX privately developed the Falcon Heavy rocket for about $500 million, and it flew its first flight in February 2018. It has now flown three successful missions. NASA has spent about $14 billion on the SLS rocket and related development costs since 2011. That rocket is not expected to fly before at least mid or late 2021.

>What's this? A Republican backing welfare programs for rich aerospace contractors? Never!

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Bolden
