I am trying to research quantum physics on my own. Bad idea I know. But where is a really good start?

>> No.1261632

Math, math , math. What is your background on mathemagics?

>> No.1261635

Just make sure you are familiar with the maths involved first.

Linear algebra, vector calculus, hilbert spaces, should cover it.

Quantum physics aren't supposed to actually be researched.
Scientists are too afraid to dvelve deep into quantum physics so they use it as a black box abstraction where they only use the goddamn algorhitms.

I'm very familiar with all three, I guess what I'm asking for is recommendations on books, I've read a bit of Hawking's A Brief History In Time, and The Universe In A Nutshell.

Pop-science is not science. You will not learn physics or QM this way!

SATAN requires more information before he can guide you.

What is the highest math class you have taken? The highest physics class? How old are you? You stil in highschool?

Ignore Sinister he's a faggot that knows nothing and a embarrassment to /sci/.

Popular science books are fun but they wont take you far enough to really get into the subject. You'll notice that 'A Brief History In Time' only has one equation in it, but Feynman once said that the only way to really get to grips with quantum physics is to 'shut up and calculate'.

So you need to learn physics from the ground up, you can't just jump into the interesting bits. If you are interested I would strongly recommend that you do so, start by taking some simply courses (correspondence ones are pretty good) and then move on from there.

Good Luck.

Little kids giving advice....
FUCKING HIGHLARIOUS!

No, people actually do research QM. There is tons of it going on, it is going pretty well actually.

Physicist more or less "know" all the hows any whys of QM already.

That "just do math" approach was from like the 1980's. LMAO.

Pre-rec's for basic Non Relativistic QM

1) All Calculus (1-4), 4= diff eq

2) Applied Analysis (Vector Cal, Stokes, Greens Theorems, Basic Coordinate systems, Fourier shit, etc)

2) Regular Mech (Lagrangian + Hamiltionian)

3) Linear Algebra (Abstract Vector spaces and shit)

OP, I'll give a non-troll answer.

Landau and Lifshitz are god-tier books, but a little heavy-going, especially if you hate maths. You could look up Alistair Rae for something lighter. One of my professors also swears by McMurry, though I've never read it.

They devoted an entire book to the non-relativistic theory, and it is a damned good book. I also notice that you have not suggested any reading.

>> No.1264334

I have been trying to self teach QM to myself also, and after speaking to a real Quantum physicist, he gave me "in seach of schrodinger's cat" to start off with, because it covers most of the basics (with a decent amount of math). And yes, while it is rather old, it is a nice staple in self learning. Afterwards if you want something fun to read i suggest "the little book of string theroy"
