how can you even tell you're smart if you don't know any smart people

how can you differentiate it from just being a misfit or having misplaced priorities

So you read a bunch of 4chan posts, decided "I am like these geniuses, not the rubes around me," and are convinced that you're right about this?

Just shut the fuck up ok.

When i was 13, I said to some high schoolers 'yeah, i'm much better at physics than people my age, i'm very good at it'

Queue 15 minutes of them asking me about supersymmetry, some basic QFT and other particle physics questions, and me just sitting there like a fucking retard.

You are a fucking retard anon. You aren't smart. Telling yourself you're 'the smartest person you know' is an easy way to become stupid. Topics that seem hard today will seem trivial in a few years when you become less stupid. Similarly, in a few years you will look back and think of yourself as a moron, and a few years after that, look back again and think 'hey, he was a moron aswell'/

Do something useful and, if you think you're smart, go and find a topic that makes you stupid. Because thats the only way you'll get smarter.

This.

I was reliably top 5 in my shitty school right the way through and it just made me bitter and give up and lo and behold in the wide scheme of things I was bottom third without the motivation.

the fact that to this day you think knowing a set of qualitative facts about esoteric topics (which they certainly didnt understand) means anything at all, means youre a simpleton. your anecdote has nothing to do with intelligence, except to out you as a mong.

I went to a UK Grammar school. It wasn't exceptional, but the guys I was talking to were obviously applying for undergrad at the time, and people tended to be interested in their subjects.

You're completely failing to understand the underlying point of my post. Lack of social intelligence perhaps? I made a completely arrogant claim because I mistook knowing what I knew for knowing much more about the field. I got outed for it straight away.

The point was that 'what you don't know' isn't the opposite of 'what you do know'. If you kid yourself into thinking it is i.e thinking that you're the only smart person you know, or thinking that you're a master at the cello, or thinking that you're a great cook, then you're going to fundamentally limit yourself because you aren't going to update 'what you don't know'. Your ability is always going to be constrained to that upper limit.

So yes, my anecdote is entirely relevant to OP's post, you just seem to lack any broader understanding of it beyond the functional meaning of the words. Are you stupid, autistic, or are you just a seething poster?

His point is perfectly valid, if OP is so smart he should do something impressive. If he did something impressive other smart people would be attracted to him and he would not have this problem. But like that anon pointed out OP is likely just some very arrogant kid like many of us were
