Why isn’t the US Government pumping money into Starship? If I was Elon I’d feel betrayed, man. The US will have three operational superheavy launch vehicles in the next two years and two of them are from SpaceX. I don’t know why NASA isn’t at least giving them a yearly stipend of $1 Billion. Shit sucks man.

Fun fact. Superheavy BN1 will catch up to Artemis 1’s Core in terms of readiness in the next few weeks. It’s amazing.

Yea but barely. Exhaust expansion would still btfo the rest of the ship, especially the shield/sail thing.

The wiki says it's a laser shield used to reflect the laser from Earth, so it's still meant to transfer force to the rest of the ship. Why do the engines have that massive tapered truss structure but the "laser shield" is just on the end of a stick?

>In the baseline mission profile, Europa Clipper is planned to be carried aboard NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) heavy-lift launch vehicle,[42][43] on a direct trajectory to Jupiter in less than three years.[2] As of November 2020, it should be ready for launch by 2024.[6] Congress has mandated that Europa Clipper be launched on SLS, but NASA has requested that other vehicles be allowed to launch the spacecraft due to a foreseen lack of available SLS vehicles.[6] The United States Congress's 2021 omnibus spending bill directs the NASA Administrator to conduct a full and open competition to select a commercial launch vehicle if the conditions to launch the probe on a SLS rocket cannot be met.[91]

>Since the development and readiness of the SLS may not match the mission's timing, an alternative trajectory profile would use a commercial rocket such as a Falcon Heavy, with a longer 6-year cruise time involving gravity assist maneuvers at Venus, Earth and/or Mars.[92] Another option is to launch on a Falcon Heavy and with a Star 48B solid rocket (812 m/s) or a Castor 30B solid rocket (3030 m/s) as a kick stage. This would require only one gravity assist, with Earth, and would shorten the cruise phase significantly.[93]

Tell me how pic related isn't unironically the most efficient and cost effective way for a fully reusable 1500 tonne to LEO launch system.

I've done some digging and I've discovered that linear aerospikes that burn RP1 aren't as difficult to build as I've been led to believe here. Also, seawater corrosion won't be an issue because protective coatings are readily available as are corrosion resistant stainless steels.

First expedition to mars. 9 scientists, 4 guys 5 girls, all of them laying face down on stretchers doing various activities, reading, playing chess, working on a computer plus one extremely sex crazed pilot whos on the verge on insanity goes around fucking them furiously, from time to time they have to move their head a bit from their work and suck his dick sideways while they keep working. They have to use noseplugs, earplugs, safety googles to prevent unwanted penetrations, and they have to pre-emptively use super lube on all of their holes. After raping all of them several times the pilot proceeds to bang his head against the wall while he masturbates until he passes out, the other astronauts have to feed him intravenously while hes unconcious and the next morning the cycle starts again

>full mass
>engine isp and thrust
>basic fuel tank arrangement

Without those it's not rocket but a UFO.

My immediate impression is that its garbage that won't even budge in Earth's gravity barring a large earthquake - you've made a building, not a vehicle.

My very generous estimations using expendable rocket payload fractions of about 4%, starting mass of rocket capable of lifting 1500 tons will be upward of 39000 tons. That will require about 600 Merlin 1D engines whose TWR is the greatest currently. Meaning thrust area of ~30m diameter circle. Added re-usability for the same payload will double that, maybe more.

TLDR: you are retarded

>> No.12573395

>>12573341
Yeah those retards convinced themselves that only governments could genuinely partake in space travel seriously and that private companies were just scams or memes especially after OTRAG and this isn’t entirely their fault, we have to remember that an organisation like NASA had gotten so grossly inefficient and incomprehensibly slow after the moon landings, Von Braun and his men either dying or retiring that it had convinced everybody that space travel was always that slow, difficult and expensive.

When they saw some complete who company come along they probably assumed if the super powers of the US or the USSR had so much trouble with space travel then some new start up was dead in the water, but as Musk has shown it was the corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy of these nations that was actually holding us back.

>> No.12573438

>>12573395
>it was the corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy of these nations that was actually holding us back.
i think what people has problems understanding is that for you need that goverment is much better for cutting edge research programs, but once its done its shit for mass implementation.

As a matter of fact, it was a clear demonstration that communism was superior, the only way america had to compete was to act as communistical as humanely possible. ARguibly the us state had more control on each person working on the apollo progam than soviet russia ever did.

People say, hurrr durr they went to the moon, go again.

nigga its two differen things, if you want to do the first moon landing ever without having ever done anything like it before its gonna be a huge R&D investment with small guarantees of success.
basically for that scenario you need a blank check

its like this.
imagine someone comes and says, hey how much money would it take for you to become a master violinist by the end of the year.
The answer is that you just dont know, but surely if they just want for a fixed per month number thats based on a specific result like any private company would do that would fail. Like, you cant tell them 100.000 per concert or 500.00 it just doesnt make sense.

Its more like, give me a blank check and no pressure, so i can spend all of my waking hours with the best violin teachers in the world and have 0 other stress, and maybe MAYBE ill be able to pull it off, but hey theres also a chance it will take me 2 years or maybe ill never achieve it, you literally have to trust me

and thats just it, retardedl ybig endeavours dont work good with a private company logic because you cant fail at any step of the way.

What the goverment does is closer to parenting.

Desire to fulfill specifications and zero will or capability to redesign things from the ground up as problems arise. For example, after the SSME was confirmed to underperform they were forced to trim down the orbiter's already quite trimmed structural mass instead of saying "Well, fuck it, a ton or two less payload we'll never use!"
The entire project was plagued with this and worse it was later canonized into bureaucratic dogma where no upgrades even technologically available ones, were implemented over the life of the vehicle.
What was a subpar design and build in the 70's continued to be used with all its flaws and problems thirty years later because upgrades had to be funded after congressional vote.

I think the gist of the whole matter is they were NASA old boys and were campaigning to continue NASA funding. Making a stand that was pro NASA more than anti Private Space.

It reeked of selfish aggrandising. Alot of these old Wright Stuff boys are more than happy that the golden era ended with them and they got to keep their records and exclusive reputations.

A Starship will be able to hold something like multiple hundreds of Starlink satellites, right? And those will go into many different orbital planes, since each plane only has so many satellites in it. But plane changes cost lots of delta-V, so they'll only want to launch satellites in nearby planes together, which could mean under-utilising Starship - maybe massively under-utilising it, because it's so frickin' huge.

This gets worse once Starlink gets past the initial phase and SpaceX only need to launch replacements for ones that break or reach EoL. A Starlink-only Starship launch after initial constellation completion would probably either be mostly empty or mostly propellant to get the satellites to where they need to be. There's a trade-off between contellation maintenance (and hence service quality) and efficiently using Starship.

I wonder if SpaceX will wind up offering really, really cheap it-launches-when-we-feel-like-it smallsat rideshares just to utilise Starship better. If they do, that'll have some really interesting effects! Perhaps they'll keep a fleet of smaller rockets for these sorts of little patch-up jobs. Or maybe they'll even contract out some Starlink launches to some other provider with a smaller-scale rocket that's better-suited to carrying a handful of smallsats to orbit.

the upper stage will need to be tugged back to land for refurbishment/new parachutes and the first stage will need to be tugged back to land so they can clean and repair those monstrous RP-1 engines. refueling this piece of shit will be a logistical nightmare, not to mention that it would sink like a rock when fully fuelled.
I already pointed this out last time, a better idea would be a supersized methalox BAC Mustard (pic related), much cheaper with nowhere near as many logistical hurdles.

In a typical ringworld the ring spins and doesn't collapse as a result. In fact, ringworlds usually spin much faster than orbital velocity in order to generate centripetal acceleration and thus artificial G on the inside surface of the ring. This requires magic materials though.

Before they reach saturation there will be quite a bit of launches. At the point where starships need to service numerous elliptic orbits they will have tankers up and running for such peculiar missions. Still, I think, it might prove cheaper to just launch the equivalent number of starships directly into the orbits even if well under capacity - see how most rockets even expendable ones launch payloads well under their maximum.

Sounds very plausible. Starship might wind up being the most economical option for almost all orbital missions, even 95% empty. I'd still expect SpaceX to offer cheap rideshares on Starlink launches just because they're already doing most of the work to get to orbit and the marginal cost of tossing on a few more smallsats is really low. If I was doing anything that could benefit from being in orbit, I would be looking really hard at cheap-and-cheerful smallsats for launch in ~5 years' time.

If someone like Von Braun said your rocket was trash and your company was a scam then that actually would have hurt, but somehow I doubt he would ever say such a thing if he was alive given how little NASA has accomplished since he left and how much spacex has accomplished in such a short amount of time with little resources.

Note this is from memory and likely from before elon started landing the falcons when I had interest in the shuttles.

Not him but SSME’s ended up costing much more money than hoped for, so instead of clustering like 7 of them at the base of the shuttle, NASA was forced to use a pair of massive SRBs

A real horror story is the RS-68. It was designed to be an expendable version of the SSME, but ended up weighing 2X as much and having much less isp (409 vs 452 seconds) than the SSME. It is also gigantic and costs $25 Million to build versus SSME’s $50-60 million. Note that SSMEs costed $60 Million to build BEFORE Aerojet cucked NASA in 2018. Now they’re $146 Million

Rideshare prices can outcompete them already, Starship rideshare will drop it through the floor and although I don't really consider the gaggle of F9/FH competitors that heavily they will contribute to that atmosphere. With a diameter of 12m and an RPM of four you could get .2g or a little more than Lunar standard. You wouldn't even need a ring, you could spin the ship up with RCS. Don't know if the solar panels would take kindly to that or not, I'm sure though you could work out a regime of slow acceleration, maybe increasing the rotations as little as +1RPM per hour for a four hour spinup or spin-down cycle.

Alright bro’s I’ve done some digging and it turns out they there are four SLS core stages that have either been completed, or are being built.

>SLS CORE-1 was never actually completed. The two tanks were built individually and to flight standards, but were not mated and were instead used as pressure tests

>SLS CORE-2 is the first completed SLS core. The two tanks were mated and engines were installed. It is slated to fly on Artemis 1 later this year

>SLS CORE-3 is currently under construction. The two tanks have been completed but have yet to be mated. It is slated to fly on Artemis 2 in 2023

>SLS CORE-4 is in the process of finishing up the individual tanks. It is slated to fly on Artemis 3 in 2024.

There have been a few SLS test articles over the years, including at least two “dummy” SLS cores, with neither actually being flightworthy.

Lastly, Superheavy BN1 is currently being stacked. It is about where SLS CORE-4 is at the moment, but expect it to fly before SLS CORE-2 does.

The only thing special about it is the rollers at the top and bottom, and some rubber at the top to catch the bases of the grid fins (or lugs placed right beneath them)

firstly, the level of detail/effort here is sick so props for that.

As for the actual design, I like it. From what I can tell it would allow for SH to be grabbed out of the air as soon as its in range. I really like this approach. Most designs demand that SH has perfect accuracy, but this design gives it some leeway in all directions. It's not overly complex or convoluted either.

Superheavy should be something in the range of 200 tons, maybe a bit more accounting for the grid fins, RCS and attendant tankage, etc, although the early versions with fewer Raptors should be lighter than spec.
Does this modeling software allow you to simulate a 180-220 metric ton load on the arm and clamp structure?

High quality shit anon, good effort and very detailed weldments. Have you run any static sims on it with/without the booster? Maybe you want the tower to be even closer to the launch pad to reduce cantilever loads.
Also, why did you use hydraulics for extending the arm rather than electric actuators or something? The hydraulics line routing for this system will be very interesting to say the least

>>12574530
Yeah the plan was to rely on the booster as little as possible for alignment, as the boosters get better you can start stripping down the arm to be more basic/reliable.

>>12574539

It was all drawn in solidworks, and if I tried to run an FEA on it I think my computer would shit itself. The best route would probably be to redraw it in something like TEKLA while only doing actual FEA on things like the hinges and rails/wheels.

As for the cantilever loads, thats why I put the extension at the top and ran some anchoring cables as well. It's all just me guessing, though.

>>12574498
I'd be a bit worried about the track system deforming under applied load. Personally I'd opt for a rotary bearing rather than a linear bearing because you can cover a larger area. There is also a decent amount of prior art in making large rotary bearings which can support an asymmetric load in cranes. Personally I think the drag line excavator Big Muskie is a good place to look for inspiration. It could pick up a payload of 294 mt and move it around pretty quickly.

12 feet in and out and 18 feet side to side, limited by the towers width.
Hard to judge angle tolerance because the rollers are there to align the booster as it comes into contact with the clamp. As it closes around the descending booster, the booster should straighten up for all 4 gridfins to make contact at the same time.

Eh you can live in the vacuum of space for a few minutes. The biggest issue would be the lack of pressure. The old Atlas rockets used steel too. There's no lower scale limit for steel construction, you just need to budget mass fractions and stage proportions appropriately.
