Except I don't, I can compare them to other work, I can actually read the paper to find if there are inconsistencies or other errors, I can contact the people who reviewed the paper and ask them questions. I can contact those who participated in the trial and make sure their accounts match up with what's published. I can compare my investigations with others who have similar concerns and make sure everything is factual. And after I do all this, If I find out I've been lied to I get to publish my own research and ruin the liars career, my gut had nothing to do with it.
