Let's do something fun- lets try to figure out if organic fruit cost more than regular fruit (we know this is true, but lets pretend we didn't). Lets fill in an excel sheet with store-bought fruit in column A and their price in column B. So, A is the item, B is the price for the item. A1 and B1 are item 1 and price 1: lets say organic banana is A1, and the price is $.89, so we put .89 in B1. A2 is item 2 (lets say, regular bananas) and B2 is price 2 ($.69). Now plot column B; holy shit magic! It looks like a line!
If you think "the fuck, am I missing something?" you aren't. Someone literally suggested sorting the prices alone because it makes a more straight line.
Replace "X" in the problem with A in the excel sheet and Y with B, and instead of A1 and B1 its Xi and Yi, with i representing the row number (A1,A2, B1, B2), and you get how fucking stupid it is.

It's actually stupider, because instead of a category (organic banana, regular banana), column A was also a number, and they sorted that alone as well. So ignore my previous example a bit:
So, to formulate a different problem: Let's figure out if rich people have a bigger grocery story bill.
In column A, put a persons income, and column B, their grocery bill. So A1 will be the income of person A, and B1 will be their bill.
Cool! Data. Now, add a trendline: y=mx+b. This is a regression line, and plots the association between income and grocery spending. Awesome! But wait, lets pretend we are retarded, and I don't like that its not a straight line. How do we get straight line?
Now sort column A by itself, smallest to largest. Then column B by itself, smallest to largest. If you're thinking "what the fuck" you are on the right track.
Now, plot the independently sorted X to the independently sorted Y.

Not that dude, but I took a CS minor during my BS, a certificate during my cell bio PhD, and I'm full-circle doing CS (ML applications to drug discovery) in my "real" job
"what I got" is straight-up my job. It's 30% finding already-built algorithms, 50% stack overflow fixes for implementing/integrating into this companies abysmal pipeline (mind you, its a startup and no one knows how to code but me, they just contracted several gifted peeps to build some crazy shit a few years ago that I have to sift through), and 20% actually doing any from-scratch coding myself. It's a LOT of learning new shit (I know SQL like the back of my hand, but guess who fucking using mongoDB for everything?), and adaptation. Coding while drunk is my goddamn forte.
