Scientifically speaking, how long until commercial companionbots are a reality?

>> No.12449691

depends on the definition of companionship. You could call a vibrator a companion robot, and indeed some people have.

What is the milestone that you are thinking about? Physical companionship is a terribly easy thing to achieve artificially, and emotional companionship is something unique to every person out there, so you're talking about a very broad spectrum between something indistinguishable from humans, and a wand with some knobs on it

I guess the big thing on the horizon that I at least see is the development of "AI" chatbots that people choose to text for some kind of emotional support or attention. I wonder what kind of results a purpose-built chatbot would have on a dating website

I think technology will be used to "grease the wheels" of romance, but not via robo-partners. I can imagine a website where you submit questionnaires, work/school history, political/religious opinions, physical/health data, etc, and a ML algorithm finds the ideal wife/husband for you in its database. Think AI marriage arranger.
